Job summary

As part of Havens Hospices' multidisciplinary team to provide counselling and emotional support to the patients and families using Havens Hospices care services.

To provide support and education to other teams, agencies and professionals working with children, young people and adults with life-limiting illnesses and following bereavement to improve people's mental health and wellbeing following traumatic life events.

To undertake assessments of patients and families who have been identified as needing emotional support.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide emotional and counselling support (up to Level 3), to an agreed caseload of patients, carers, and family members pre and post-bereavement.
  • To work closely with Havens Hospices Care Teams to identify patients, carers and families that require psychological support, ensuring good communication and effective joint planning and working.
  • To ensure that all patients and families are aware of the supportive services available to them.
  • To undertake clinical assessments to include safeguarding risk assessment.
  • To manage referrals in a timely and appropriate way.
  • To work with patients and families using individual, group or family techniques, involving other members of the multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • To provide an opportunity for patients and families to explore their emotions safely and creatively regarding life-limiting illness and bereavement issues.
  • To participate in multidisciplinary meetings as necessary.
  • To facilitate groups and activities in accordance with the needs of the service.
  • To keep records which facilitate communication within the Hospice following the Hospice policy and be mindful of good work practice.
  • To be a volunteer coordinator and support a small group of counselling volunteers as directed by the service lead.

  • To participate in the multi-professional teaching programmes of the Hospice.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Recognised professional counselling or psychotherapy qualification (Level 4 diploma as a minimum)
  • Be a registered member of a recognised professional body (BACP, NCS)
  • Professionally accredited or eligible to work towards professional accreditation

Desirable

  • Experience within a palliative care environment/providing bereavement support
