A post has become available for a highly motivated and
enthusiastic lead nurse to join our children and Young Peoples service at
Little Havens Children’s Hospice, part of the Havens Hospices Charity.
This post is for a dedicated senior nurse who is passionate
about providing and developing excellent services for children and young people
who have life limited lives aged 0 – 25 years across Essex. The successful candidate will demonstrate a
developed understanding of children’s hospice care and the requirements of
children who have special education needs and the needs of children and young
people who are at the end of their life.
The successful candidate will be
responsible for the nursing teams caring for children and young people within
the CYP service, both in the hospice and in the community. As the lead nurse, you will be accountable for coordinating safe, high quality,
evidence-based care to improve the experience for children, young people and
their carers by providing strong professional leadership and line management to
clinical staff.
You will work closely with the Head of
Children and Young Peoples services to develop the service and increase
capacity by developing innovative services that are responsive to the needs of the children, young people and
families we care for.
Main duties of the job
In conjunction with the Head of Children’s Services and other senior team members, co-ordinate, develop and manage the CYP service in line with the hospice strategic and operational plans.
Responsible for leading the efficient and effective running of the clinical service including safety, governance, education and training
Provide operational leadership and management support to the integrated Children & Young Peoples team which includes in patient and Hospice at home clinical teams
Run effective, caring, responsive, safe and well lead services
Lead and be responsible for high quality patient experience

Operational Management
Develop the service in conjunction with the Head of Children and young peoples service
Lead and sustaining an open, supportive culture that facilitates multi-professional team working.
Manage, direct and support all nursing staff, clerical staff and volunteers on a daily basis, delegating tasks and responsibilities accordingly
Ensure staffing plans are in place to provide care meeting the NICE NG31 / NG61standards for the operating hours of the service.
In conjunction with the Head of Services, investigate untoward clinical incidents, drug errors, accidents, complaints, losses or staff grievance, in accordance with Hospice policy.
Participate in the Little Havens Children and Young People senior nurse on call rota.
Support disciplinary procedures and carry out investigations when appropriate.
Assist in the recruitment of staff, ensuring effective induction and probationary review.
Monitor staff sickness/absence and address in line with Hospice Policy.
Encourage and participate in change projects within the care environment and support change decisions by Managers.
Ensure services are delivered effectively within available financial resources and budget management.
Set annual objectives with staff and monitor their performance through individual appraisal systems.
Facilitate regular team meetings and ensure good communication channels operate within the team.
Ensure comments, complaints and compliments are reported to the Head of Service, investigated in line with Havens Hospices policies and procedures and ensure appropriate action plans are implemented and evaluated
Demonstrate a proactive and supportive leadership style that encourages team participation in decision making processes.
Facilitate, mentor and support the team to ensure a cohesive, balanced and efficient service delivery.
Encourage individual team member’s personal development.
Contribute to the development of polices, and procedures are developed and monitored for use in the clinical environment, and remain current and relevant
Maintain high standards of record keeping within the Hospice at Home team
Clinical Care
Provide specialist palliative care expertise, acting as a role model and offering clinical leadership and support to the nursing team.
Undertake clinical shifts on a regular basis and when necessary, across the 24/7 spectrum.
Responsible for and influencing the assessment, planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation of evidence-based care with regard to the physical, spiritual, social, emotional and psychological needs of individual patients and to have an appropriate level of involvement in direct nursing care.
Assess the holistic needs of children young people and their families to ensure programs of care are developed and implemented by members of the wider team including wellbeing, play, education and other activities.
Contribute to the development and enhancement of care by actively participating in standard setting, policy development and clinical audit with colleagues across the wider team.
Provide advice on symptom control/care management to other health care professionals.
Carry out all duties and conduct yourself in line with the NMC Code
Strategy
Work closely with the heads of services contributing to strategic planning and implementation of future developments.
Deputise for the Head of service when required, representing the organisation
Health & Safety
Responsible for and promotes the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, volunteers, service users and visitors.
Responsible for creating a culture where observed, actual or potential Health and Safety hazards are made safe and reported without delay.
Responsible for developing and implementing systems that ensure equipment is kept clean, in good working order, checked routinely and defect or malfunction is reported.

In conjunction with the Clinical Practice Facilitators, contribute to the development of the care team staff through effective induction programs, promoting and supporting continuing professional development, appraisal, and supervision.
Provide support and create a reflective learning environment for staff & visitors that is both welcoming and encouraging i.e. student nurses, community nurses, medical students.
Develop and maintain own knowledge and skills in palliative care and management, underpinned by research and best practice.
Participate in the delivery of programs of education provided by the hospice both internally and externally.
Facilitate and participate in clinical supervision in line with Hospice policy.
Research & Audit
Participate in the collection of data for approved survey, research management, planning projects and auditing.
Initiate and participate in research activities.
Personal Development

- Post graduate certificate or equivalent post registration education and training in a relevant field
- Leadership management development program
