At Fair
Havens Hospice in Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, overlooking Priory Park, we’re looking for a Registered Nurse to work as part of our multi-disciplinary team
providing holistic care within our new, modern In-Patient Unit.
Main duties of the job
The Band 6 Nursing role will regularly co-ordinate a shift of nurses and Healthcare Assistants to ensure the safe and effective running of the team, providing holistic care to people who have life limiting conditions and /or who are terminally ill and dying.
They will support in enhancing independence, quality of life, and the support provision of a variety of therapies, offering practical and emotional support to all patients and their carers, whilst ensuring the highest possible standards of specialist and supportive palliative nursing care is delivered, responding to changing circumstances and needs.
They will regularly take responsibility for being the nurse in charge, formulating plans for patient care, managing frequent changes, and leading the shift. As well as being:
Responsible for delegating workload to staff, ensure nursing care is delivered to the highest standard and reflects the needs of the patient /children and young people.
Ensuring that, as far as possible, family and / or carers are included in guiding the care provided and can deliver care where it is safe, and they wish to do so.
Uses their skills to assess and interpret patient conditions and takes action as appropriate
Liaise with other professionals working within primary and secondary care settings, regarding care when required
Remain accountable for adhering to medicines management policy.

- Ensure that the highest possible standards of specialist and supportive palliative nursing care are delivered to patients, responding to changing circumstances and demands.

Provision of care
- To be responsible for assessing the needs of patients, implementing and evaluating the care provided.
- Would manage the IPU patient caseload during a shift, including the management and support of the nursing team.
- Plan and review care provided to patients on a patient needs basis.
- Contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of interventions and treatments with IPU Advanced nurse practitioner sister and hospice consultant.
- Has an in-depth knowledge of symptoms and anticipates changes in patients’ condition and reacts accordingly?
- To ensure that, as far as possible, family and / or carers are included in the care provided.
- To ensure that the nursing care is delivered to the highest standard and reflects the needs of the patients.
- To provide support for families and other carers, prior to and following a death, involving other agencies or disciplines when appropriate.

- To ensure complete security of drugs and administer them safely in accordance with regulations.
