Job summary
We have an opportunity for a Consultant in Palliative
Medicine to join our medical team for a period of 12 months. This is a locum
post assuming the Medical Lead for our Inpatient Unit (IPU) whilst also have
some timetabled community sessions to support the locality teams. The successful applicant will work alongside the existing Consultant
Team and junior medical workforce to deliver expert, holistic care to our
patients and their families.
Main duties of the job
The
successful applicant will also contribute to the second on call rota providing
out of hours support to the first on call doctor for the IPU and the on call
clinical nurse specialist both in the community and hospital settings.
The frequency of these is one in five weekdays and one in five weekends.
The post holder will be expected to engage in annual
appraisal as per the GMC requirements for medical revalidation.
Fully funded clinical supervision sessions are available.
These sessions take place during normal working hours and the post-holder would
be exempt from clinical duties whilst undertaking supervision.
About us
Farleigh Hospice is a specialist palliative care provider
for a population of 420,000 in the Mid Essex region. It moved into its modern,
purpose-built premises in 2006 with a further extension (Lantern Suite) opened
in 2011 to provide extended outpatient and drop in facilities. It includes a 10
bedded inpatient unit (IPU) where patients are admitted for specialist symptom
control, end of life care, respite or palliative rehabilitation. In addition,
since August 2023, we have extended our inpatient offer, whereby 4 of our 10
inpatient beds provide longer term care for people with a rapidly progressing
life-limiting illness (Hospice Rapid Access Service, HRAS)
We also operate 3 multidisciplinary
community-based teams, covering each locality. These consist of clinical nurse
specialists, specialist therapists (both physiotherapy and occupational
therapy) and family support workers (including psychologists) as well as a
Hospice at Home team.
Farleigh Hospice is a thriving charity
located in Chelmsford, Essex, next to Broomfield Hospital. The post is within commuting
distance of London. Travel times from the Eastern part of London take
approximately 1 hour by car and there is free on-site parking. Regular trains
from London Liverpool Street to Chelmsford take 35 minutes.

Offering senior level clinical leadership and
support to the Farleigh Hospice Inpatient Unit team which includes the non-consultant members of the medical team as
well as the wider MDT including RNs and HCAs.
Undertaking twice weekly specialist palliative
care ward rounds on the inpatient unit
Leading and participating in the weekly
inpatient unit MDT meetings
Reviewing HRAS patients when clinical need
dictates
Contributing to the locally delivered
education programme for generalist medical staff and allied healthcare professionals
Undertaking community outpatients and
domiciliary visits to support existing community consultants and locality teams as needed
Non-clinical
Duties:
The
appointee is the Medical Audit and Policy Lead for Farleigh Hospice
Will be responsible for identifying,
coordinating and participating in audit within the medical team
Will attend the quarterly medicines management
meetings and clinical quality meetings
Will ensure that medical policies are updated
regularly in line with best practice and available evidence- base
On
call Duties:
To
participate in a 1 in 5 non-resident, second on call rota for both weekends and
weekdays. Advice is mainly given via telephone with remote access to our
electronic patient record, but re-attendance at the hospice may be required:
Telephone back up (and occasionally face to
face support) for the junior medical team member providing first on call service to the inpatient unit
Second on call support to the hospice based
CNS on call Mon-Sun 8am until 8pm
Second on call support to the hospital based
CNS on call on the weekends 8am to 6pm
