Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a qualified BACP registered Counsellor to work within Action for ASD’s Children’s Service team.

The role involves working in a busy children’s service, to provide a safe and confidential space for children to explore what the diagnosis of autism means to them.

The post will be based at the Action for ASD Autism Support Centre in Burnley; however, occasional visits to local schools and community centres will be necessary.

Main duties of the job

To provide individual support to children from the age of 7-11 years and counselling to children and young people from the age of 11-18 years, who have received a diagnosis of autistic spectrum condition, have referred for counselling, and are registered with our children’s service.

You will work alongside the children’s service team in the development of the service to include therapeutic group support for children, young people and their families. Supporting children, young people and their families to understand the diagnosis and encourage the development of strategies.

About us

Action for ASD was incorporated as a charity in 2001. We provide various children's services and adult services. We are also commissioned by East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen CCGs to provide the adult (16+) autism diagnostic pathway including post diagnostic counselling within East Lancashire.

The Objects of the Charity as defined in its Memorandum of Association are:

a) To relieve those persons who are diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) by the provision of support, advice, information and assistance to those individuals with autistic spectrum disorders, their families and carers and associated professionals.

b) To increase public awareness regarding the difficulties and circumstances of people with autistic spectrum disorders and their families and carers, and to encourage acceptance within the community.

The Charity's mission is to make a difference to the lives of the autistic community in East Lancashire and to support their families and carers.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To work alongside the children’s service team to provide children and young people with support through individual counselling virtually or face to face at the Autism Support Centre in Burnley and occasionally local schools or community centres in East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen when needed.

2. Supporting children and young people to explore what a diagnosis means to them and develop strategies to help with daily life.

3. Provide counselling initial assessment to CYP referred, to include risk assessment and safety planning.

4. Attend regular clinical supervision and take part in children’s service team meetings

5. Manage a caseload of young people, organise, and prepare appointments at local schools and other safe locations in the community as required to meet their needs.

6. To help plan and deliver therapeutic groups for children and young people

7. Where relevant foster good relationships with individual, groups and external agencies that need to be informed and or involved with Action for ASD’s children’s services.

8. Ensure that children and young people receive support that is appropriate to their needs. Provide information, signposting and referrals to and on behalf of the children and young people with their consent.

9. Attend multi-agency meetings including team around family and child in need meetings and liaise with other professionals/agencies as and when required where the children and young people have given consent as appropriate.

10. Ensure that all the work undertaken adheres to Action for ASD’s policies and procedures in particular reference to safeguarding, child protection, and confidentiality and date protection.

11. Keep accurate records of the work undertaken with children and young people and ensure that appropriate information is provided to contribute to the service monitoring.

12. Use a range of outcome measures to collect date and measure the impact of the service in line with funding requirements.

13. Work in partnership with the children, young people and their families, Action for ASD children’s service team and community organisations to promote the welfare and wellbeing of the child/young person.

14. Contribute to the overall development of Action for ASD’s children service and in particular, the development of the children’s counselling service.

Desirable
