SignHealthis a passionate and unique Deaf led charity, committed to creating a future where there are no barriers to good health and wellbeing for Deaf people.Our Psychological Therapies Service delivers NHS Englands National Therapies for Deaf people.

We deliver therapy directly in British Sign Language (BSL) to Deaf patients without the need for interpreters. We support people who are having difficulty coping and who may be suffering from a common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety or a phobia.

Applicants must be fluent in BSL, this must be demonstrated on your application and will be further tested at the interview, applications that do not demonstrate fluency in BSL will not be shortlisted.

The trainee PWP position includes undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in evidence-based low-intensity CBT at the University of Reading.

Main duties of the job

Interview date 16 August 2023.

Starting University on 12 Sept 2023 you willattend university on teaching days on campus 2 days a week after induction. The rest of your time will be spent learning and practising the skills and techniques to become a qualified PWP with Sign Health therapies team. You will be mainly home based but due to the nature of our work as a national provider, weare looking for someone based in the South East of England region.If you do not live in this area, you must be willing to travel and attend the University of Reading alongside providing face-to-face/ group clinical sessions in this area where necessary.

Upon successfully completing your training you will become a Qualified PWP.

If you are invited to an interview, you must provide evidence that you can study at postgraduate level.

As a Trainee PWP, you will work within the service providing high volume low-intensity interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role. The training post will equip you to provide a range of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) based self-management interventions to clients with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. The post holder will attend all taught and self-study days required by the university, as specified within the National Low-Intensity curriculum. We work closely with the University to ensure a joined-up approach to training and supervision.

MAIN PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB

The post holder will be part of the NHS National Therapies for Deaf people with anxiety and depression located within SignHealth and will provide low to moderate-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role. This training post will equip the post holder to provide CBT to Deaf clients who have a mild to moderate range of anxiety and depression-related problems for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective. The post holder will work in the service for 3 days of the week bringing their already well developed skills to practice at the same time as using the newly developed skills from the training program which they will attend for the other 2 days of the week.

The post holder will work with people with different cultural backgrounds and ages who are British Sign Language (BSL) users and should be committed to equal opportunities

DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. CLINICAL

1.1. Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service whose first or preferred language is BSL.

1.2. Undertake patient-centred interviews to identify areas where they wish to change and assess clients for suitability for psychological interventions, supporting the self-management of their recovery.

1.3. Carry out assessments of risk and follow safeguarding procedures.

1.4. Contribute to the decision-making on the suitability of new referrals and referral allocation, adhering to the Service referral protocols and referring unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent or step-up the persons treatment to high intensity psychological therapy as necessary.

1.5. Provide a range of information and support for evidence based high-volume low-intensity psychological treatments. This may include guided self-help computerised CBT, one to one or group sessions, online or face to face.

1.6. Use communication skills in working with people to understand their personal and often very sensitive difficulties.

1.7. Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary, conveying CBT and other psychological formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language.

1.8. Represent Sign Health NHS therapies for Deaf people in a professional manner by undertaking presentations and promotions as and when requested.

1.9. Adhere to an agreed number of clinical contacts per week to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient.

1.10. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.

1.11. Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the

Service.

1.12. Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols.

1.13.Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped-care approach.

1.14.Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process.

1.15. Liaise with other health and social care staff from a range of agencies in the care provided to clients.

1.16. Operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.

2. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

2.1 Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic and practice based assessments.

2.2 Apply learning from the training programme in practice.

2.3 Receive supervision from the educational provider in relation to the coursework to meet the required standards.

2.4 Prepared and present clinical information for all patients on their caseload to clinical case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service as delivered.

2.5 Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in clinical practice.

2.6 Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competencies and clinical practice.

3. PROFESSIONAL

3.1. Ensure that client confidentiality is always protected.

3.2. Operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.

3.3. To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing in accordance with professional codes of practice.

3.4. Be aware of and keep up to date with advances in the spheres of CBT and other psychological therapies.

3.5. Ensure clear professional objectives are identified, discussed, and reviewed with senior therapists on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development (CPD).

3.6. Participate in individual performance reviews and respond to agreed objectives.

3.7. Keep up to date all records in relation to CPD and ensure personal development plan maintains up to date specialist knowledge of the latest theoretical and service delivery models/developments.

3.8. Attend relevant conferences/workshops in line with identified professional objectives.

3.9. Participate in service improvement by highlighting issues and implementing changes in practice.

4. GENERAL

4.1. To contribute to the development of best practice within the service.
