We are offering an exciting opportunity for experienced palliative care professionals to join St Marys Hospice based in the heart of South Lakeland, Cumbria.
You will be part of a multi professional team ensuring the continuity of high quality, specialist palliative and end of life care for patients in our 8 bedded Inpatient Unit. This service is an important part of our comprehensive support for families which includes teams providing care at home, emotional support, therapies and education. We work closely with our valued partners in the community, hospital and primary care.
Our team is a mix of Specialty Doctors and Advanced Care Practitioners qualified to Masters level. Three times a week the team links virtually to SPEOLC consultants based in national teaching hospitals for ward rounds and MDT. This consultant team also provides OOH support.
We offer support to pursue educational opportunities e.g. diploma/MSc in Palliative Care.
Permanent, flexible hours are available.
On call: 1 in 5, non-resident weekend cover with additional week night on call duties.
Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, with a current license to practice.

Main duties of the job
Fully engage with all handovers during the day, including the full morning review handover at 9.00am, involving all staff as appropriate. Encourage and support an in-depth dialogue, taking account of different team member viewpoints.
Arrange and coordinate admissions with the nurse-in-charge, taking into account patient dependency levels and staffing.
Support the coordination of patient discharges, working collaboratively with others in the team, especially nursing staff, the clinical administrator.
Undertake a comprehensive admission of new patients, together with nursing staff, adopting holistic palliative care principles. Complete admission template and EMIS records.
Undertake advance care planning including discussion and recording of DNACPR, emergency treatment plans and ceiling of care. Build a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, encouraging involvement in decision making and expression of wishes and preferences in care and treatment.
Provide psychological, emotional and spiritual support for patients, families and others close to the patient. Refer to Adult Social Care and Family Support team as required.
On a daily basis, ensure each patient is reviewed
Ensure use of agreed symptom management guidelines and treatment formularies to inform decision making.
Participate in virtual MDT meetings and Board Rounds

St. Marys Hospice is a charity, providing specialist palliative, supportive and care at the end of life for people living with advancing illness, and their families. We have two main bases: the hospice building in Ulverston and the St Marys Living Well Centre in Barrow in Furness. We also provide care in the home setting and provide therapy groups within the local community.
Hospice services include a 6-8 bedded In-Patient Unit, Hospice at Home Service, Family & Bereavement Support Service and Living Well Therapies.
We are a regional educational hub for palliative and end of life care education and part of the NW Coast Learning Collaborative. We deliver a range of education to internal staff and to the wider health and social care workforce.
