Job summary

Here at Derian House Childrens Hospice, we have an exciting opportunity available for Trustees to join our team based in Chorley on a voluntary basis.

As a Trustee, you will actively contribute to giving firm strategic direction to Derian House, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. You will work in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer/ the Senior Leadership Team and support the employees, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation.

We are particularly looking for Trustees who have paediatric clinical experience.

Main duties of the job

  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and adhering to Nolans seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, Objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
  • Commitment to the charitys objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities
  • Strategic and forward looking vision in relation to the charitys objects and aims
  • Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment

Derian House Childrens Hospice is proud to have been providing high-quality care to children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions for over 30 years.

The Derian House care team provides symptom management, palliative and end-of-life care, as well as short break respite care to children, young people and their families across Lancashire, South Cumbria and Greater Manchester. Supported by our dedicated community team, family support team, neonatal services and young peoples services we are able to provide a wide range of support and care in a variety of settings.

Job responsibilities

Your responsibilities as our Trustee will include:

  • To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
  • To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
  • To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charitys funds
  • Maintain careful oversight of any risk to the reputation and/or financial standing of the organisation
  • With the support of the CEO and SLT formulate strategic plans and regular review of long-term strategic aims of the charity
  • Monitoring that decisions and actions taken at board meetings are implemented
  • Assume guardianship of the legal, cultural and financial integrity of the organisation
  • Giving direction in the context of the implementation of the Boards strategy and policies
  • Receive regular informal progress reports of the organisations work and financial performance through the CEO and relevant board and subcommittee meetings
  • With the support of the CEO and SLT protect and manage the property of the organisation
  • Ensuring adherence and compliance around key policies to e.g. Equality of Opportunity, Health & Safety and in all decisions and discussions of the Board and its sub-committees
  • Ensuring compliance with charitable, health and social care regulators e.g. Care Quality Commission and Charity Commission
  • Attend and be a member of other committees or working groups
