Job summary

St Leonards Hospice, York is seeking to recruit a substantive part time consultant in palliative medicine (6 PAs) to provide clinical leadership for the 16-bedded in-patient unit and support to the community-facing Hospice@Home and Sunflower Community Hub teams.

An additional 2 PAs are also available to support the community specialist palliative care team employed by York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to provide maternity cover from March 2024. Further details can be obtained by contacting the clinical lead for specialist palliative care, Dr Sunitha Daniel.

This post is part of an exciting growth of local palliative care services. Since 2021 York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has employed a second consultant in Palliative Medicine focusing on community care. Together the four postholders will work closely to co-ordinate and deliver care across all clinical settings.

St Leonards Hospice is ranked among the top 20 hospices nationally for financial sustainability and is therefore able to respond to new opportunities for innovation to enhance patient care and influence wider services.

The hospice was rated as Good in the latest CQC inspection, and it is our ambition to build on this with a new 5-year strategy. Part of this strategy is to extend our care to under-represented groups and enhance education and research activities.

This role has been approved by the Royal College of Physicians.

Interviews will be taking place at the Hospice on Monday 8 April 2024.

Main duties of the job

Based in the hospice, the successful applicant will work with the existing team of highly experienced hospice practitioners, Specialty Trainees and Medical Director to ensure patients receive responsive and high-quality care. Whilst the Medical Director will be accountable for hospice medical care and assist the CEO in the wider running of the hospice, this postholder will be expected to share responsibility for patient care and take an active lead in the development of both in-patient and community-facing clinical services.

This exciting opportunity is for applicants who hold a full GMC registration and who are on the GMC specialist register for palliative medicine, or willing to work towards this in the first 6 months in post. You will need to be enthusiastic, have a caring manner and a willingness to work with a multi-disciplinary team.
