Job summary

As a Hospice Specialty Doctor you will provide high quality palliative medical support across all clinical service areas of the Hospice. You will work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team in providing care to patients. As part of this post you will play an active role in supporting clinical governance as well as service development. You will be involved in the provision of a 1 in 5 first on call rota (non-resident) under consultant supervision.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality medical care across all clinical service areas as required, assessing patient needs holistically;

To clerk patients on admission to the in-patient unit;

To assist with the daily management of patients on the inpatient unit;

To help ensure medical records are accurate and up to date including electronic records;

To participate in weekly education sessions which include all aspects of governance, including audit, clinical guidelines and journal reviews;

To be involved in the provision of 1 in 5 first on call, prospective cover, (non-resident) under consultant supervision;

To undertake appropriate continuing professional development and appraisal activities in accordance with the GMC guidance and Royal college of Physicians; and

To complete an annual appraisal and be compliant with the requirements of revalidation.

In this role you will play a critical role in ensuring people with progressive illness benefit from the highest standards of specialist palliative care. This role will provide you with developmental opportunities and you will help to support local GP Trainees build their knowledge of palliative care.

Situated just a few minutes from Junction 32 of the M62, the Hospice provides specialist palliative care for patients in east Wakefield and serves a population of around 188,000 people. Our 13 Incare bedrooms have recently been refurbished to the highest quality and we also offer a wellbeing service for our patients and families. We successfully deliver the only specialist Lymphoedema service in the district and run the Wakefield District Bereavement service.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Overall

To provide high quality medical care across all clinical service areas as required, assessing patient needs holistically;

To clerk patients on admission to the in-patient unit;

To assist with the daily management of patients on the inpatient unit;

To help ensure medical records are accurate and up to date including electronic records;

To participate in weekly education sessions which include all aspects of governance, including audit, clinical guidelines and journal reviews;

To be involved in the provision of 1 in 5 first on call, prospective cover, (non-resident) under consultant supervision;

To undertake appropriate continuing professional development and appraisal activities in accordance with the GMC guidance and Royal college of Physicians; and

To complete an annual appraisal and be compliant with the requirements of revalidation.

Management responsibilities

To support the Medical Director with managerial responsibilities and help with the administration and delivery of on call rotas;

To cooperate with the team of doctors and other clinical and operational managers to contribute towards the efficient delivery of services; and

To attend departmental meetings and educational sessions as required.

Education

To be responsible for supporting own professional development and the professional development of others;

To participate and be involved in the delivery of medical team weekly educational meetings which include journal reviews, audit presentation and review of clinical guidelines;

To participate in external CPD activity including attending regional palliative medicine learning groups;

To support the delivery of education; and

To support medical student teaching and GP registrars on six monthly placements.

Governance

The post holder will be encouraged to take part in all aspects of clinical governance, including audit and journal clubs, and contribute to bi-monthly clinical governance meetings with the wider clinical team.

General Duties and Responsibilities

All employees are required to abide by the Health and Safety at Work Act, attend annual mandatory training sessions and ensure they comply with Hospice policies and procedures at all times;

Employees must demonstrate commitment to their own personal development and are required to make a positive contribution to fundraising and raising the profile of the Hospice;
