Talking Matters Sefton provides IAPT therapies to communities in South Sefton and Southport & Formby, commissioned by the NHS. We are now looking to recruit an individual who shares our values and purpose as we continue to grow our Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner team.

This role is based in the Sefton IAPT Service and is key to the ongoing development of our low intensity service provision within South Sefton and Southport & Formby. The role represents an opportunity for individuals with a passion for improving the mental health and wellbeing of communities to begin, or develop, a career in psychological therapies.

Main duties of the job

Job Title: Trainee PWP

Hours of work: 37.5 hours

£22549-24882 per annum, rising to Band 5 on completion of training

The working week will be split between the service and University, with typically 1 day a week in University and 4 days a week in service.

The post-holder will be:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Organised and able to manage the demands of an academic course alongside a gradually increasing caseload
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication both written and verbal

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the PGCert in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies.

Ideally, you will have experience in working with people experiencing poor mental health either in a paid or voluntary capacity.

Educated to the equivalent of degree level, you will be a ‘people person’ with the ability to communicate well, and in a non-judgemental way with individuals at all levels.

Importantly, you will have a desire to equip individuals with strategies to help them better manage their own mental health.

About us

You will go through our comprehensive, in-person training program in your first week of employment which will give you the foundation you need to succeed in the role, as well as offering a great opportunity to get to know your new colleagues.

In service, you will be supported by a Senior PWP, Step Leads, and more senior clinical staff. Clinical supervision is provided, as well as weekly case management to ensure you have continuing, ongoing support through your training.

Once you have successfully completed the training course, you will move to a Qualified PWP role, with a salary increase to Band 5.

MHM offers 25 days annual leave per annum, plus statutory holidays and a 5% contributory pension scheme.

Duties to include:

· Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service.

· Assess and support people with a common mental health problem in the self management of their recovery.

· Undertake patient-centred interviews which identifies areas where the person wishes to see change and or recovery and makes an accurate assessment of risk to self and others.

· Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the department’s referral protocols, refers unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary or steps-up the person’s treatment to high intensity psychological therapy.

· Provide a range of information and support for evidence based high-volume low-intensity psychological treatments. This may include guided self-help computerised CBT, information about pharmacological treatments. This work may be face to face, telephone or via other media.

· Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary.

· Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the overall number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient.

· Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.

· Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service.

· Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols and use these records and clinical outcome data in clinical decision making.

· Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.

· Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process

· Operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.

TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

· Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post including the academic element in own time.

· Apply learning from the training programme in practice

· Receive supervision from educational providers in relation to course work to meet the required standards.

· Prepare and present clinical information for all patients on their caseload to clinical case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered.

· Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in clinical practice.

· Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competences and clinical practice.

PROFESSIONAL

· Ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer and any regulating, professional and accrediting bodies (eg BPS, UKCP, BABCP), and keep up to date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the department of health (e.g NHS plan, National Service Framework, National Institute for Clinical Excellence).

· Ensure that client confidentiality is protected at all times.

· Be aware of, and keep up to date with advances in the spheres of CBT

· Ensure clear professional objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with senior therapists on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development.

· Attend clinical/managerial supervision on a regular basis as agreed with Manager.

· Participate in individual performance review and respond to agreed objectives.

· Keep up to date all records in relation to C.P.D. and ensure personal development plan maintains up to date specialist knowledge of latest theoretical and service delivery models/developments.

· Attend relevant conferences / workshops in line with identified professional objectives.

  • Evidence of ability to study successfully at undergraduate year 1 level or the equivalent
  • Psychology or other health related undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:1

Desirable

  • Training in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, counselling or within a psychological therapy.

  • Ability to evaluate and put in place the effect of training
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including telephone skills
  • Able to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients
