Job summary

This is a 12 month scheme. You will be employed by the training hub on a fixed term 12 month contract with an annual salary of £25,000 (includes access to the NHS pension scheme). During the 12 months you will be placed for two 6 month blocks in different GP practices. These will be practices that are well set up for and approved as centres of excellence in education and training. In the first 6 months of the scheme you will complete a number of short courses to gain practical skills including Basic life support, phlebotomy, vaccinations & Immunisations, wound care, ECG and ear syringing. In second six months you will complete one of the long term conditions (LTC) diplomas with the primary care training centre (Respiratory, diabetes, cardiovascular or womens health). Throughout the 12 months there will be a monthly peer group learning session where the whole group come together to learn and share though action learning sets.

Main duties of the job

To be productive as GP Practice Nurse (GPN) there are a number of practical skills that need to be learnt post qualification. For many GP practices that only have one or two practice nurses the impact on their day to day productivity of employing a nurse new to general practice for the 6 to 12 months it takes to develop those skills along with the time required to mentor and develop that nurse makes it challenging for many practices to take on nurses in this situation. The training hub has developed a training scheme that will bring in a number of new nurses to primary care and provide them with the core skills needed to be a GPN so that they can be employed and immediately productive in a GP practice at the need of the scheme.
