Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Staff Nurse to join the excellent Ward team at St Hughs Hospital.

The Registered Nurse will be supporting delivering individualised clinically appropriate, efficient and effective evidence based nursing care for patients on a shift to shift basis, in line with the Healthcare Management Trusts and St. Hughs Hospitals procedures and care pathways.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will provide high quality, safe and compassionate care to patients. The post holder will be responsible for assessing care needs and the planning, delivery and evaluation of individual care.

To provide high quality, safe and compassionate care to patients. The post holder will be responsible for assessing care needs and the planning, delivery and evaluation of individual care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.

To deliver individualised clinically appropriate, efficient and effective evidence based nursing care for patients on a shift to shift basis, in line with the Healthcare Management Trusts and St. Hughs Hospitals procedures and care pathways.

To act as a professional resource for nursing support staff and to undertake the role of supervisor for these individuals, working in support of the staff in the discharge of their duties and facilitating the use of evidence based practice, patient assessment, clinical analytical skills and patient early warning systems.

To maintain accurate, contemporaneous and legible patient documentation, being fully aware of legal, professional and confidential requirements and utilising only authorised abbreviations

To provide excellence in customer care to patients, their relatives significant others and other internal / external customers including consultant users.

Contribute to the use of corporate and clinical governance systems to monitor and develop clinical services.

To positively promote with staff, users, patients and other visitors the ethos of the Healthcare Management Trust and St. Hughs Hospital, based on a demonstrable empathetic and sensitive approach to the care of patients, relatives, users and colleagues.

Ensure that the maintenance of the custody and administration of medicines within the unit is in accordance with St. Hughs policies, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the medicines Act of 1968.

Ensure HMTs policies and practices are implemented and followed, ensuring that the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and CQC Regulations 2014.

Display at all times a professional approach and action, so as to obtain and justify patient and user trust and confidence in St. Hughs Hospital.

Maintain own individual professional practice. Participate in ongoing professional educational development and registration requirements.

To participate in unit based quality assurance activity based on written standards and patient care outcomes.

To ensure infection prevention and control policies are adhered to within theatre

COMMUNICATION

To develop and maintain staff morale and contribution through positive and proactive leadership, communication and example.

To participate in the development and maintenance of communications both written and verbal with patients, users and other managers and staff within the hospital, communicating nursing issues in a positive and professional manner.

Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication.

Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with HMT policy.

Communicate with and provide support for patients relatives, carers and visitors.

Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the written and spoken word and ensure correct storage of patients records at all times.

Liaise with other clinical areas as necessary for the co-ordination of patient care and the smooth running of the ward/department.

Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patients property in accordance with Hospital policy.

Ensure where appropriate that the programmes of training for learners, both student nurses and support workers are completed.

Undertake formal and informal teaching sessions as required and undertake training to act as a mentor to students.
