Job summary

The postholder will be responsible for leading the Ward team; co-ordinating the delivery of evidenced-based care within the clinical environment. This will be delivered through clinical leadership, knowledge of HMT's core values and utilisation of effective management skills.

The post holder will drive continuous improvement with the ward and implement processes in line with the organisations' strategic vision. The role will operate within the HMT clinical governance framework and will work in a collaborative approach with the multidisciplinary team in the interests of developing and promoting high qulity patient care.

The post holder will have reponsibility for driving ward utilising and cost effectivenes of the department therefore must possess a strong sense of commercial awareness and continuously strive to improve the departments performance.

Main duties of the job

To lead and manage services to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including the Care Quality Commission.

To lead and be responsible for improving the patient experience and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care can flourish and be measured.

To lead clinical governance within the department ensuring evidence based care, audit and best practice is undertaken

To lead and promote an environment where accuracy and patient/customer service is at the centre of all work activity including the achievement of theatre utilisation and efficiency targets.

To lead and participate in the creation and maintenance of a safe environment, in which high quality, effective patient/customer focused services are delivered within agreed standards, timeframes and costs.

To lead and maintain a nursing culture which is open to change, new ideas, concepts and innovation whilst influencing HMTs strategy and direction.

To lead the team in the implementation of the staffing levels following national guidance to maintain patient safety and high-quality care, utilising resources flexibly to meet service need and looking at alternative ways of working, recruiting and developing staff members where appropriate

To create, maintain and enhance a culture conducive to learing and the growth and development of staff.

Clinical

To provide effective leadership in the Ward maintaining good staff morale and ensuring high standards of patient care are performed and maintained.

Provide visible clinical, professional and managerial leadership to all staff in the Ward promoting cohesive team working within and across the departments.

Exercise leadership based on professional behaviour, sound organisation, excellent interpersonal relationships and effective communication.

To ensure the provision of evidence-based care is implemented to comply with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Ensure compliance with all HMT policies and governance framework, taking overall accountability within the ward.

To be accountable for their own clinical practice and participate in improving knowledge and professional competence to comply with PREP regulations and registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)/Healthcare Professionals Council (HCPC)

To develop their own clinical practice as a part of the education process for Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

To progress the use of Integrated Care Pathways (ICPs) and other Ward/Hospital documentation as changes occur.

Manage and monitor the effectiveness of staffing levels, ensuring that skill mix reflects volume and dependency levels, ensuring national guidance is implemented.

To work with the Head of Clinical Services in the development of new roles to ensue that that the ward can be managed effectively, including the use of student nurses, associate nurses, assistant practitioners, apprentices

To organise and participate in clinical audit and risk management and react effectively to recommendations and outcomes. To provide preferred consultant care to ensure best practice for patients and their families.

To provide information for and participate in the Hospital Clinical Governance.

Undertake clinical duties when appropriate to maintain professional clinical/technical skill set and to be actively leading the team clinically.

To promote the principles of the WHO Five Steps to Safer Surgery/NATSIPS & LocSIPS.

To continue to support and provide Clinical Supervision for Ward nurses.

To manage and maintain the appraisal and personal development system for Ward staff.

Change Management:

To share the organisational vision with the Ward and engage staff with change.

To promote HMTs philosophy and lead continuous improvement beyond CQC standards.

To integrate new technologies within the Ward.

To identify skills gaps in the departments and develop a training needs analysis for all Ward employees.

To actively drive recruitment campaigns where appropriate.

General Management:

To compile and manage the Ward budget and to work effectively and efficiently within the constraints of each financial year.

To ensure that Ward KPIs are implemented and met.

To drive cost effectiveness of the departments, ensuring that costs are minimised and flexed to meet variances in activity, to maximise department surplus.

To actively liaise with the Head of Clinical Services.

To participate in the appointment of Ward staff, monitor progress and provide support as and when required and create an atmosphere conducive to learning for all staff and students within the department.

To provide an annual Ward business plan that ensures both Ward and HMT philosophy are encompassed in those plans.

To represent the Ward at hospital meetings and provide information regarding activity and developments.

To act as representative for the Head of Clinical Services as required.
