Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for Registered Nurses currently employed at St Hugh’s Hospital to apply for a Senior Register Nurse position on the ward. The post holder is required to be responsible and accountable without direct supervision for the ward/day unit areas. They will be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the care needs of the patients. They will take charge of ward/day unit areas, supervise and teach junior members of staff and act up in the absence of the ward manager/deputy ward manager.

Main duties of the job

· To work cohesively with all members of the ward team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times

· To take charge of the clinical area, utilising appropriate support as necessary from senior managers

· To manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skill mix of staff for patient dependency, bed management, utilisation of time and equipment, in the absence of senior staff

· To ensure that each Patient is assessed and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the patient and that this is accurately documented

· To be competent in the administration of medication, including intravenous routes

· To ensure that treatments prescribed are carried out, and that sufficient handovers are provided to team members to ensure of changes in the patient’s condition are shared

· To demonstrate a professional approach to work and act in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct at all times and to ensure that team members do likewise

· Comply with Infection Prevention and Control principles, techniques, policy and guidelines.

· To demonstrate awareness and compliance with HMT policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and core behaviours.

· To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, relatives and staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events
