Job summary

We are seeking to appoint an experienced commercially astute Director of Finance with an understanding of how the not for profit and charities sector operates financially. You will have significant experience of leadership and decision-making at a senior level, of working as a team member with senior colleagues, and be a qualified Accountant, ACCA, CIMA or ACA.

Main duties of the job

Your role will direct and oversee financial activities including the delivery of an effective and efficient financial accounting and management service, informing strategic decision making as well as providing key information to the CEO, Trustees, and broader senior management. You will also be required to maintain and develop the vital communication links with the community, ICB and Commissioning, corporate sector, major donors and the wide Hospice sector.

You will need to be a motivational and compassionate leader, and able to inspire your team to be empowered to continuously look at ways of striving to deliver an outstanding financial and accounting service.

Job responsibilities

Leadership & Management:

Develop and implement a strategic vision and plan for the Hospices Finance service, including developing the Finance Strategy and Business Plan in line with key priorities of the Hospice.

Reduce financial risk, providing recommendations to maximise profit and assisting SMT and Board members in decision making.

Play an active part in the strategic review of legal structures/ways of operating, and optimise return/benefits of the charitable status.

Develop/analyse key performance measures that can be used internally/externally for activity monitoring and service improvement.

Act as company secretary, supporting the board with governance/planning/understanding key risks/opportunities.

Lead transformational change from a finance perspective supporting delivery of our operational strategy.

Undertake negotiations with statutory bodies/other organisations on matters of funding/securing of resources/and SLAs.

Assisting the SMT in the preparation and financial evaluation of business plans and proposals.

Support the development of major contracts/grant budgets, including advising on VAT, during project design and ahead of signature.

Overall responsibility for the compliance with all taxation issues relating to the Hospice and lead contact with HM Revenue & Customs.

Financial Systems, Control and Accounting

Working knowledge of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) and Statement of Financial Activity (SOFA) reporting.

Ability to lead on and advise the Board and SMT of the charitys responsibilities.

To manage all income and expenditure processing, including donations, ensuring that all banking, cash controls and security is in place.

Improve finance systems/ processes & streamlining/modernisation of these in line with industry development and practices.

To ensure accurate capture and processing of all income.

To determine, advise on and promote policies/practice/standards in all financial matters, ensuring legal compliance.

Lead on the planning/implementation/authoring of reports for internal and external audits relating to finance function.

Preparation of all Financial Statements to a standard necessary to comply with all legislative, accounting, and regulatory requirements.

Ensure compliance with Charity Commission, Companies House, HMRC, and any other relevant bodies.
