Job summary

Are you looking to start a nursing career in General Practice in London? If so, this is the opportunity to study for a General Practice Nursing qualification on a funded and supported programme?

Please note both adult and children's nurses can apply!

London Primary Care Training Hubs and local General Practices are looking to recruit nurses in to a General Practice Nursing (GPN) academic training programme starting in September 2022. We actively encourage both newly qualified RNs and experienced RN's to apply for role. Newly Qualified Nurses would have additional support and mentorship over the first 2 years of their career in General Practice. The GPN programme offers you employment in General Practice with supervision and at the same time, the opportunity to study for a Post Graduate Diploma in General Practice Nursing at either Hertfordshire University or at Greenwich University.

You will be employed by a practice on a full time basis, but work part time whilst studying for the other half of the week at Herts University. You will be supported in the practice to develop core competencies and capabilities of a GPN.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit nurses who want to work in the exciting world of primary care. It is a challenging and varied career, requiring autonomous practice whilst being part of practice and network teams. Successful candidates will need to bring enthusiasm and confidence to develop their role in the complex and rewarding context of General Practice. Looking after patients from babies to older adults, patients with chronic diseases and providing the preventative support, your days will never be the same! Successful candidates will be offered a contract of employment with a GP practice located in a practice across London. Your application will be directed to the Borough closest to where you live recognising that travel to work should be minimised.

Career opportunities in primary care range from specialist roles, such as diabetes or respiratory management to Advanced Clinical Practice and Education and Management roles.

About us

Training Hubs are education and training coordinators for primary care. They support recruitment of staff and enable staff to develop to their full potential and work to the top of their licences. There is a training hub in all of the Boroughs in London and they work closely with their Primary Care Networks ( Groups of GP Practices that works together called PCNs) and individual practices to achieve these goals.

The common aim of the collaboration between Training Hubs and PCNs is to create networks centred upon population health, local decision making and integration for workforce planning through education and training. Furthermore, they aim to empower community organisations to work to assess workforce training needs, expand capacity and capability and innovation and foster multi-professional training and education environments for the current and future workforce.

The Functions of the Training Hub

  • Supporting workforce planning
  • Responding to local workforce need;
  • Coordinating educational programmes;
  • Ensuring educational quality;
  • Developing a faculty of trainers;
  • Supporting development of the existing workforce and fostering innovation

Nurses working in a practice will have an increasing role across a network of practices so it is likely that this training role will involve working in more than one practice.
