ST KENTIGERN HOSPICE
STAFF NURSE Hospice Band
5 INPATIENT UNIT
Salary £28,270 (pro-rata)
Responsible to: Clinical Services Manager
Accountable to: Consultant Nurse
ROLE
To work as an
integral member of the hospice team and provide leadership to other colleagues
ensuring the delivery of excellent care to patients and their families in this
nurse led model of hospice care.
AIMS
1. To develop clinical expertise in
palliative care and act as a positive role model promoting the excellent
standards that lie at the heart of St Kentigern Hospices philosophy of care.
2. To maintain continuity of nursing care
in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility.
3. To be responsible following induction
period for the assessment of care needs, planning, delivery and evaluation of
care.
4. To
offer supervision and support to junior staff in the clinical area.
CLINICAL FUNCTION
1. Work as a member of the
multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic care, integrating physical care
with psychosocial and spiritual needs.
2. Assist with initial and on-going
assessment of patient and family needs.
3. In discussion with team
members will plan, initiate, supervise and participate in patient and family
care.
4. Evaluate and update
nursing care plans in response to changing problems/needs.
5. Monitor nursing practice,
encourage development of colleagues through discussion of elements and propose
patient care plans.
6. Demonstrate and provide
effective communication with patients and families throughout their involvement
with St Kentigerns Hospice. Telephone support and advice access to other
nursing/medical staff for information.
7. Information and access to allied health
professionals.
8. Bereavement support and access to
follow up support.
MANAGEMENT
1. When required take
responsibility for the management of the in-patient area in the absence of more
senior staff within agreed guidelines.
2. Liaise with other multi-professional
agencies within the hospice,
community and hospital to provide continuity of care.
3. Create and maintain high
standards of nursing care within the unit, encouraging positive relationships
with all groups involved in the day care of patients.
4. Be responsible for
co-ordinating all activities when in charge of the unit supported by Clinical
Lead.
5. Ensure hospice policies,
procedures and guidelines are adhered to in order to promote the safety, well
being and the interests of patients, staff and visitors.
6. At all times follow the
code of professional conduct and ensure all staff within their sphere and
responsibility also adhere to the code.
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

1. Participate in education
and development of all staff within the clinical area.
2. Act as mentor as required.
3. Demonstrate a commitment to developing
and utilising research.
4. Be receptive to research
plans of others and participate in appropriate research activities.
5. Assist in the application
of research findings appropriate to clinical/nursing practice.
6. Participate fully in quality
assurance/clinical audit initiatives.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. Identify own learning
objectives and attend relevant study opportunities following discussion with
management team.
2. Maintain records of
supported study and provide evaluation of study attended.
3. Written appraisal by nurse in charge
(minimum yearly).
4. Demonstrate awareness of
and knowledge of fire policy, attends fire lectures yearly.
5. Awareness of and attend Manual Handling
training yearly.
6. Demonstrate awareness of
and update knowledge of Health & Safety At Work Act. Participate in health
and safety assessments of clinical areas.
GENERAL
Rotation between other hospice clinical departments and between day and
night shifts as required.
