At The Myton Hospices, we provide specialist care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses, and their loved ones, from the point of diagnosis to end of life. We are a much-loved and well supported charity, at the heart of our community. We have three hospices, a range of community services, and 25 charity shops in Coventry and Warwickshire.

In this new role, you will provide expert supportive and strategic leadership across all of our clinical services, leading medical, nursing and allied health teams to provide exceptional quality, responsive and proactive end of life and palliative care.

This role will support our work by ensuring that the excellent specialist care and services our patients and their families and carers receive reaches as many people as possible and continues to sustainably expand.

You will be based at either our Coventry or Warwick site, with regular travel in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • Current professional clinical registration (e.g. NMC, GMC, HCPC)
  • Experience of leading a large, multi-disciplinary team, including Medics, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals
  • Excellent CQC and Healthcare Governance knowledge
  • Palliative and end of life care service delivery expertise
  • Experience of strategic planning and Board level influencing
  • Confident decision-making abilities

This role will involve an enhanced DBS check.

Main duties of the job

  • Leading our large multi-disciplinary clinical team, ensuring they run as one seamless, cost-efficient service for patients and their carers
  • Maximising suitable admissions to inpatient and Hospice at Home services
  • Ensuring Myton meets its regulatory, clinical and legal compliance obligations relating to patient care
  • Ensuring Myton continues to provide excellent training and education for Nursing and Medical students and all clinical employees
  • Working with the service development lead to expand the reach of our patient and family services, both directly and in partnership with other aligned providers
  • Accountability for Clinical Governance including CQC compliance and medicines management
  • Building and leveraging mutually beneficial networks with multiple stakeholders

Summary of Role

The Director of Patient and Family Services (DoPFS) is accountable for the delivery of high-quality, responsive Palliative and End of Life Care across all of The Myton Hospices services.

Through strong leadership of a large multi- disciplinary clinical team, and working with the Medical and Nursing and Care Leads, the post holder will ensure that the Medical and Nursing and Care teams work as one team, to provide an excellent, well-run, cost-efficient and seamless service for patients and their carers and will ensure that they are always at the heart of decision making.

The DoPFS is accountable for maximising suitable admissions to inpatient and Hospice at Home services, through their relationships with the senior nursing and medical teams internally and with external referrers and stakeholders.

As a member of Senior Leadership Team (SLT) the post holder will influence strategic thinking, by providing SLT and The Board of Trustees with accurate, fact-based and up to date information about Palliative and End of Life care at Myton and within the wider healthcare landscape.

The post holder will be accountable for the hospice fulfilling its full legal compliance obligations and continuing to develop high-quality, safe and effective services across the organisation.

They will also work with the Medical Education lead to ensure that Myton continues to provide training and education for Medical students and maintains its reputation as a centre of training excellence.

Structure

The Director of Patient and Family Services will report to the CEO as part of the Senior Leadership Team. The Senior Leadership Team is made up of the Director of Finance and Facilities, Director of Income Generation and Supporter Development, and Director of People and Workplace.

The leads of all clinical and medical teams will report to the Director of Patient and Family Services.

Strategic Responsibilities

  1. To work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to develop the corporate strategy for The Myton Hospices
  2. To share and provide analysis of data relating to the performance of all clinical services across Myton for the CEO, SLT, Clinical Governance Committee and the Board of Trustees, to highlight any risks and make recommendations for improvement
  3. To work with SLT and Senior clinicians to develop a researched and knowledge-based clinical strategy that will ensure Myton can stay at the forefront of Palliative and End of Life Care.
  4. To have oversight of all developments in patient and family services and work with the lead for new service development to ensure effective implementation of new, or improvements to existing, services within agreed timelines and by agreeing appropriate metrics for testing outcomes and performance
  5. To provide the Trusts Fundraisers and Income Generation team with data that will ensure opportunities for securing funding for clinical services are maximised.

Leadership Responsibilities

  1. To be a visible part of SLT and to inspire, motivate and enthuse staff within own directorate and more widely across the Hospice, promoting a culture of learning, professionalism, collaboration and innovation, celebrating our successes and encouraging ambition and achievement

Corporate and Clinical Governance Responsibilities

Clinical Education Responsibilities

  1. Accountable for ensuring we deliver a robust clinical education strategy and plan.
  2. To work with the Clinical Education and Medical Education leads on the clinical education agenda, ensuring that the right resources are in place to guarantee that allclinical staff are trained to the right level and that training is up to date
  3. To work with the Clinical Education lead and the Medical Education lead to identify opportunities to provide education to others providing palliative and end of life care
  4. To work with the Medical Education Lead and wider medical team to ensure that Doctors allocated to placements within Myton are appropriately supervised, mentored and trained, and that we continue to be regarded as a suitable host organisation for Doctors in training.
  5. To support the continuation of our established high quality CPD programme, supporting the education and knowledge of all clinical teams

Line Management Responsibilities

  1. Through adopting a coaching style and encouraging staff development, build a strong and capable P&CS Leadership team; working through them to deliver excellence and quality in clinical service
  2. Set clear team priorities and individual objectives that are clearly linked to the Hospices strategic goals
  3. Ensure the effective management of the directorate, ensuring that staff are supported and have regular review meetings and have meaningful appraisals
  4. Ensure that all relevant professional standards are maintained

Operational Responsibilities

  1. Delivery of commitments within Clinical Directorate SLAs
  2. Has ultimate responsibility, with input from the Lead Consultant, for decisions relating to patient admissions and care and for relationships with carers, families and external partners
  3. Bringing together clinical teams to ensure a seamless service for patients and quick decisions about their care.
  4. Preparing the organisation for CQC Inspections and working with the inspectors during the visit
  5. Investigation of complaints and reporting of outcomes, including conducting Root Cause Analysis inquiries and reports where this is necessary, and embedding any changes in practice identified as necessary through these.
  6. Ensuring any aspect of Clinical Research that is carried out in relation to Myton is compliant with all aspects of research governance and good practice, and is compliant with legal and regulatory requirements
