We
are looking for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our Wellbeing
Centre and Outpatient Services here at St Johns Hospice.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will act as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine for the Wellbeing Centre and Outpatient Services at St Johns Hospice, and will have clinical responsibility for patients accepted by the Wellbeing Centre & Outpatient Services, as well as providing cover for the Consultant in Palliative Medicine responsible for the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team and Hospice IPU at St Johns Hospice.
The post-holder will provide leadership, support and supervision for the medical team at St Johns Hospice.

Job description
Job responsibilities
- Work as
part of a team of consultants, providing specialist palliative care to patients
predominantly in the hospice wellbeing centre and out patients. The post will
also require occasional palliative care reviews of hospital patients, in
addition to cross-covering the community and the IPU to ensure adequate clinical cover for the service is
maintained when colleagues are on leave.
- Take
responsibility for patients under his/her care and will undertake clinical duties
associated with care of patients and the running of the clinical departments.
- Work collaboratively with all other team
members and provide clinical support to the wider multi-disciplinary team.
- Ensure that comprehensive plans are made
and recorded for each in-patient prior to the weekend in both their clinical
record and the handover sheet
- Ensure
comprehensive handover of clinical information to consultants covering out of
hours, ensuring seamless continuity of care
- Communicate
effectively within the multi-disciplinary care team within the hospice and
amongst wider teams to ensure seamless service provision across settings and
different services.
- Act as a
key member of the Senior Management Team, liaising with the Chief Nursing
Officer, Medical Director, Assistant Director of Nursing Hospice, Consultants
in Palliative Medicine, Hospice Heads of Departments and other staff members,
ensuring a multi-disciplinary approach to palliative care.
- To work
closely with and support the doctors and nurses on the ward in order to
prioritise and manage the workload on a day to day basis.
- Will
contribute to clinical service developments as identified in the Hospices
strategic and business planning processes.
- Participate in teaching programmes for
multi-professional teams within and outside the hospice.
- Provide clinical and educational
supervision for doctors in higher training in conjunction with consultant
colleagues.
- Participate, as required, in the
development of protocols, guidelines and documentation for St Johns Hospice.
- To abide by all organisational
policies and guidance contained within the staff handbook, especially in
relation to confidentiality and information governance.

- Advanced Communication Skills certificate / training is desirable
