About us
There are 12 Deep End practices in Middlesbrough the highest proportion across the entire NENC ICB area.
Eleven of these practices have agreed to collaborate on a more strategic and sustainable project addressing a key social determinant of health, which all practices identify as a shared priority. They intend to pool resources to deliver a unified project that improves support and care for vulnerable adults and children facing safeguarding risks and concerns.
From 2021 to 2024, Middlesbrough had the highest rate of children on a child protection plan (CPP) in England for three consecutive years. The rate of referrals for children in need (CIN) was also the highest nationally during this period.
Ensuring children grow up in a safe, secure and supportive environment is key to reducing the impact of trauma and distress in early years and the subsequent impact on adult health and well being in later years.
The impact of this work on GP surgeries in the Deep End is considerable and requires significantly more resource (compared with non-Deep End practices) to
undertake the necessary risk assessment
make appropriate referrals and enquiries
support families and carers for those identified as vulnerable but not meeting threshold for referral
ensure priority access and follow up for key services e.g childhood immunisations
liaise when needed with local authority social care services
attend key safeguarding Strategy Meetings and Case Conferences
