Main duties of the job

As Public Relations Officer for St Ann's Hospice you will be responsible for the Hospice's relationship and reputation with the media and wider community.

Through engaging copywriting, strong relationships with media contacts and the ability to spot the story, this role will promote the work of the hospice through storytelling and compelling content.

Your role is to work with the wider Marketing and Communications department to raise the profile of the hospice through a variety of channels including the media, award submissions, case studies and expert comment, website news stories and blogs.

You will be experienced in your field with a proven track record of writing high impact press releases and news stories.

You would be joining the team at an exciting time for the hospice as we build our new purpose built hospice at Heald Green.

About us

Contract: We are pleased to be able to offer this post as a full time permanent position.

Salary: Band 5 Competency Based Framework, £29,640 pro rata

Working pattern: 22.5 hours work pattern to be discussed and agreed but could be over 5 days per week or compressed into 3 days depending on candidate.

Based at: Based at Heald Green, some cross site and home working.

Free Car Parking at both St Ann's sites.

The successful candidate will be subject to a Standard/Enhanced DBS Check, the cost of which is covered by the hospice. Any post holder within the organisation will be expected to undertake safeguarding training appropriate to their role and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures. All staff must work in accordance with their statutory roles and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding in accordance with the Working Together to Safeguarding Children 2023, The Care Act 2014, and Prevent Duty 2015.

  • Maintain, develop and maximise relationships with the media, both print and broadcast.
  • Identify potential media stories, organise photo opportunities, draft press releases and proactively seek opportunities for the Hospice and its representatives to appear in the media.
  • Interview a wide range of people including staff, volunteers, patients and their families and supporters to write engaging case studies and news stories that highlight the work of the hospice.
  • Circulate media releases after approval from the Head of Marketing and Communications.
  • Monitor and record all media coverage received and manage a press clippings service.
  • Write engaging and creative content for the website and other Hospice materials including case studies, news stories and expert comment.

  • Draft lines of enquiry and prepare statements with the Head of Marketing and Communications to deal with any media enquiries around sensitive issues.
  • Work with the Head of Marketing and Communications to respond to reactive media enquiries.
  • Keep abreast of sector news and relevant stories in the press where the hospice could contribute or engage in the debate.
  • Work with colleagues to enter awards relevant to the hospice and prepare award entries.
  • Build relationships with staff and volunteers to develop opportunities for expert comment both in the media and for the Hospice website
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met and stakeholders are informed of progress.
