Role
Summary
Working as part of an integrated
multidisciplinary team, the postholder will work with other doctors to provide
the necessary medical support to all relevant hospice services.
Key
Responsibilities
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, to
provide medical care to patients under the care of Dr Kershaws Hospice, on the
In-Patient Unit, Well-Being Centre or in the Community setting as required.
To admit patients to the Inpatient Unit, carry out
daily assessments, plan and implement patient care (including safe discharge)
and provide good communication with families and carers.
To provide therapeutic interventions as necessary,
such as ascitic taps, blood transfusions etc.
To supervise and support GP trainees and FY2 doctors
on rotation, either as a formal Clinical Supervisor or as part of a Placement
Supervision Group.
To provide medical advice and leadership to the team
at Dr Kershaws Hospice. To participate in the In-Patient Unit
multidisciplinary meetings (MDTs). To provide cover as required at the Oldham
Locality MDT.
To utilise the electronic patient administration
system and makes full use of information and technology resources to ensure
high quality patient care, ensuring accurate and contemporaneous records.
To cover the Dr Kershaws Hospice Medical Advice Line
for primary and community care services in Oldham. This includes appropriate
information gathering, provision of medical advice, accurate recording of the
advice given and a brief written update for the patients own GP. In some
instances, it entails issuing a prescription or a written form.
To participate in the hospices medical on-call rota,
on weekday evenings and nights as well as weekends
To ensure good liaison with primary and secondary
health and social care teams.
Administrative
and Managerial:
To participate in regular medical appraisals / job
performance review and meet all the requirements for medical revalidation.
To develop effective working relationships with all
members of the multidisciplinary team.
To participate in end-of-life care locality and
network forums as required, disseminating and sharing information as required.
To actively participate in service development
initiatives as appropriate, contributing to service redesign in response to the
demands of the national and local agenda, including updating policies, clinical
guidelines and protocols.
To plan, organise and prioritise workload effectively,
particularly in times of pressure in order to maintain quality standards,
completing duties within normal working hours.
Education,
Training and Professional Development:
To attend internal education meetings and participate
in presentations and teaching as requested.
To maintain own palliative care knowledge and skills and
achieve the educational standards set out in line with the skills, knowledge
and competency level required of Speciality Doctors at the hospice. This
includes advanced communication skills.
To keep abreast of medical development, research and
audit relevant to Palliative Care, and to attend relevant educational
activities. This includes attending and presenting at the hospices Journal
Club.
In liaison with the Practice Development Coordinator,
to actively participate in the delivery of internal training and awareness
sessions for internal colleagues.
To attend training courses and develop additional /
enhanced skills when required by the organisation.
Quality,
Audit and Research:
To actively participate in the collection of quality
data, in particular IPOS.
To actively participate in audit, research and
clinical governance programmes.
To abide by all organisational policies and guidance
contained.
General:
To adapt and develop in line with the changing needs
of the role.
To act as an ambassador for Dr Kershaws Hospice in
order to raise the profile of the organisation at local, regional and national
level as required.
To work flexibly across departments from time to time
as may be required.
To undertake other duties commensurate with the
seniority of the post as may be requested by senior managers.
To successfully complete all statutory and mandatory
training according to the organisations requirements. To successfully complete appropriate
specialised training as agreed from appraisals and in accordance with personal
development plan.
Conditions
of Service:
The postholder is required to be fully registered with
the GMC with a licence to practice and attain revalidation as necessary.
The postholder is required to maintain appropriate professional
indemnity cover.
The post is subject to a satisfactory assessment of health
and fitness by the Occupational Health Department.
The post is also subject to Enhanced Disclosure by the
Disclosure and Barring Service.
Health and
Safety/Security
To
be familiar with all requirements of the Health and Safety at Works Acts and the
Hospice Health & Safety policies and regulations applicable to the post.
To
comply with Health and Safety legislation.
To
cooperate actively with the nominated Health & Safety person in achieving
the aims of the Hospice Health & Safety Policy, Fire Regulations, related
issues and various procedures and ensure the legal requirements are met.
To
take responsible care the health and safety of themselves and of others who may
be affected by their acts or omissions.
To
wear appropriate safety clothing and use appropriate safety devices as
requires, and not to interfere with or misuse anything which is provided in the
interests of health and safety.
To
report and cooperate with the investigation of all incidents and accidents that
have led to or may lead to injury and to report all hazards or shortcoming in
the protection arrangements.
To
ensure as far as predictable that relevant materials used within the Hospice
are properly stored, used and disposed of and that any items of equipment are
properly tested, used, maintained and repaired as necessary.
Volunteers
Dr
Kershaws Hospice is generously supported through its active volunteers who
work alongside employees of the Hospice, across all departments, helping to
fulfil the needs of the services.
As
part of all roles at the Hospice, it is expected that all post holders commit
to assisting and supporting volunteers to perform their roles to the best of
their ability. In addition, it may be required of the post holder to act
as a volunteer lead if identified with the Volunteer Co-coordinator, as
appropriate.
General

Confidentiality -
It is a condition of employment that staff will not disclose any
information obtained in the course of their duties other than to those entitled
to receive it. The post obtained in the

confidentiality of personal data remains secure and the terms of the Data
Protection Act and relevant Hospice policies are met in respect of information
held on the Hospice computer system.

commitment. Staff have a responsibility
to ensure that they are aware of specific duties relating to their role and
should familiarise themselves with the Hospice safeguarding policy. Regular safeguarding training updates will be
held and are mandatory for all staff.

developments within the service. Any
review will be undertaken in conjunction with the post holder.
