Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Occupational Therapist or Mental Health Nurse to join our growing team of healthcare professionals working with newly arrived asylum seekers. The role will focus on recovery from injuries and disability, helping patients regain their abilities so that they can lead more fulfilled lives. Duties will include conducting physical and psychological assessment of clients, developing treatment plans and rehabilitation programs making use of our bespoke well-being services and other local services.

Job Purpose

To manage a caseload of service users with complex needs within the community, using specialist Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention skills, including highly specialist sensory processing, postural care and complex equipment provision.

To use specialist clinical skills to assess and deliver intervention to service users with complex needs within a variety of settings.

To contribute to the ongoing development of health and wellbeing provision for asylum, seekers at Bevan Healthcare.

To work within a multi-disciplinary setting spanning medical, nursing, social care and allied health professionals as well as charity and third-sector organisations.

To carry out work under the guiding principles of clinical governance and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Main Duties/Responsibilities

To manage, assess, plan and implement interventions for a caseload of complex service users, addressing occupational performance and skills deficits to meet service users needs.

To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress and to ensure effective intervention.

To provide Occupational Therapy advice to service users and their carers to promote aims of Occupational Therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to care

To communicate effectively with service users and their carers to ensure understanding of health and social needs in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team members within the service.

In line with local guidelines, review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and personal development review.

To contribute to the induction and education of staff, students, volunteers and other workers/visitors who access the service.

To contribute to the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practice through the use of evidence based practice projects, audit, research and outcome measures and implement any changes as required.

To undertake any other duties of a similar nature consistent with the responsibilities of this post in order to provide a quality service.

Leadership

To work with the objectives set for your team and monitor these within Bevan Healthcares agreed performance management framework.

Review the performance of your team in line with the organisational and performance objectives and standards; identify team and individual development needs.

To ensure that the team adheres to legal, professional and organisational standards, policies and protocols.

To develop strong relationships with senior managers to promote effective cross-functional team working across Bevan Healthcare that supports the achievement of the organisations objectives, standards and protocols.

To develop talent and diversity by ensuring all staff in your area of responsibility receive an annual performance and development review incorporating the development of a personal development plan.

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 1 year experience of occupational therapy practice
• Documented evidence of continuing professional development
• Experience of working with people with complex needs
• Successful track record of negotiation and advocacy on behalf of patients

Desirable

• Experience of working with people who are seeking asylum
• Experience of working in or with the wider statutory and charitable/third sector asylum seeker providers
• Experience of teaching and training colleagues
• Experience working in primary care or a community setting
• A track record in service development
• Experience of monitoring team performance against key performance indicators

Knowledge

Essential

• Specialist knowledge of the full range of OT client groups
• Theoretical study and in depth experience of legislation and policy surrounding disability, housing, building adaptation and funding streams
• Demonstrate effective clinical reasoning, knowledge and skills
• Understanding of current health and social care policy
• Knowledge of the social determinants of heath and how this directly affects patients

Desirable

• Knowledge of asylum seeker services and legislation which may influence their health or social care needs

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree in Occupational Therapy
• HCPC registered Occupational Therapist

Desirable

• Evidence of study at masters level
