Job responsibilities

Main Duties/Responsibilities

• To facilitate occupationally based groups as identified by an Occupational Therapist.
• To work individually with service users on specific tasks and therapeutic activity as identified by an Occupational Therapist.
• To promote a culture of engagement in meaningful occupation within the service in order to enhance quality of life.
• To provide interventions in the manner that is consistent with Bevan Healthcare standards and values.
• To provide feedback to the team regarding observed occupational performance during a session which will contribute to assessment and therapeutic interventions.
• To maintain clinical records using the electronic patient record system(s).
• To liaise with carers and other professionals as relevant.
• To undertake relevant activities to meet training objectives identified with your supervisor.
• To work effectively as a member of a team in providing therapeutic
• activities using a person centred and occupationally based approach.
• To contribute to the Occupational Therapy advice, intervention and support given to service users and their carers.
• To provide timely feedback to the MDT information regarding the service users wellbeing and occupational performance.
• To use technical/creative skills to engage service users in meaningful and appropriate activities to promote independence, recovery and well-being.
• Under supervision of an Occupational Therapist, facilitate and participate in planned group-work and individual activities.
• Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist or Nurse, contribute to the ongoing assessment and adjustment of clinical interventions based on the fluctuating needs of the service users.
• Undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service.
• To contribute to risk assessments with regards to service users and clinical environment.
• To report incidents, safeguarding concerns, complaints and compliments.
• To actively participate in regular supervision and annual appraisal.
• You will complete the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy via the apprenticeship route over 3 years, leading to HCPC registration.
• You will be expected to travel to university for teaching and learning sessions as advised by the University, pass all assessments and obtain HCPC registration.
• There is a requirement to complete placements in other areas of OT practice, within the West Yorkshire area.

Leadership

• To support in the learning and experience of Occupational Therapy and other multi-disciplinary students on placement within the organisation within the remit of the role.

• Operate within information governance protocols and ensure business and patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• GCSE Mathematics grade A*-C (9-4 on new system) or equivalent level 2 qualification
• GCSE English grade A*-C (9-4 on new system) or equivalent level 2 qualification
• Willingness to study on the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy degree at a Yorkshire university on an apprenticeship route
• Either 3 A Levels (preferably with a health related subject) grade BBB, or T Level in Health or Healthcare Science grade merit, or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Experience

Essential

• Experience of working with vulnerable adults
• Experience of successful and assertive advocacy for individuals facing social exclusion to other agencies and statutory services
• Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the challenges that homeless and vulnerably housed people face when accessing housing, healthcare, and other services

Desirable

• Experience of joint working with healthcare services
• Experience of working as an OT Assistant

Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of the welfare system, supported housing pathways and other services for the homeless
• Understanding of safeguarding of vulnerable adults principles and procedures
• Understanding of the importance of involving patients as fully as possible in the process of care planning
• Understanding of both patient and personal safety issues on/off site
• Understanding of data protection regulations and the need for patient consent

Desirable

• Understanding of the health issues associated with chronic homelessness and social exclusion
• Understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and its relevance when working with homeless patients

Skills and abilities

Essential

• Full driving licence with access to own car for work purposes
• Excellent organisational skills and an ability to prioritise own caseload in a rapidly moving service
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to engage with and manage expectations of patients with complex needs
• Good administrative and IT skills
• Positive attitude towards working collaboratively and supportively, seeking expertise of colleagues appropriately
