Job summary

Based in the beautiful village of Bartestree, approximately 5 miles east of Hereford city, St Michael’s Hospice has been providing the highest quality care, to the local community for over 35 years.

We are proud of the commitment we place on the health and wellbeing of our patients, family members, staff and volunteers. We are looking for an experienced Reiki Therapist to join our very well respected and highly valued Complementary Therapy Team for a fixed term of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

As an integral member of the multi-disciplinary Team, your key role will be to promote and deliver Reiki sessions for all connected to the Hospice. You will carry a caseload of patients and family members and also be involved in providing Reiki therapy for our Day Hospice and patient support groups.

We are looking for someone who is fully trained in Reiki and who has completed the Healing in Hospitals and Hospices course run by the Sam Buxton Sunflower Healing Trust who are funding this post. You will need to be able to communicate sensitively and effectively and previous experience in working with palliative care patients would be desirable.

Service Provision

• Carry a caseload that offers reiki therapy to patients, their family members, carers, staff and volunteers

• To aim to deliver a total of 6 reiki sessions per working day (30 minute sessions)

• Plan, implement and evaluate using appropriate outcome measures individual programmes of reiki therapy within professional qualifications, communicating and liaising with other members of the patient care team where needed.

• Monitor, review and modify treatment where appropriate

• Work with complex patients who require specialised, skilled complementary interventions. This may include patients who are near end of life or are in high levels of distress.

• Discuss and make decisions in conjunction with the MDT with regard to patient care and treatment plans, with guidance from Complementary Therapy Coordinators.

• Ensure that records are updated in a timely and appropriate way.

• Liaise with Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator and other patient care teams to ensure the reiki therapy service is known, communicated well to all, meets the needs of patients, family members, staff and volunteers, and is part of the overall development of patient and carer care.

• Undertake relevant Clinical Health and Safety risk assessments in delivery of service.

Developmental and Educational

• Provide support, teaching and advice to all members of the patient care team on the role and availability of reiki therapy to enable them to use the service appropriately.

• To work alongside the wider multidisciplinary team in promoting the Rehabilitative Palliative Care approach enabling people to live fully until they die.
