Job summary

BPAS is an independent healthcare charity which has been advocating and caring for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy for more than 50 years. We are the leading specialists of abortion advice and treatment in the UK, taking care of almost 80,000 women each year in over 55 clinics nationwide. Nearly all the women we see have their care paid for by the NHS

We are seeking a dynamic Regional Clinical Director to lead and support our units in our northern region, ensuring the delivery of exceptional care to our clients

The post holder will carry out Clinical Director role for 22.5 hours a week and also undertake work as a surgeon for 15 hours per week.

As the Regional Clinical Director, you will play a vital role in providing clinical leadership and governance, ensuring the delivery of high-quality and evidence-based care within our services. You will lead a team of medical professionals, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and provide medical advice to specialist teams.

The role will also require you to carry out duties as a Treatment Doctor/Surgeon. You will provide safe, effective and comprehensive surgical and medical terminations of pregnancy to BPAS clients. Ability / willingness to train to provide surgical abortion to 23 weeks and 6 days desirable. This role is anticipated to have a Monday to Friday schedule

Main duties of the job

About You

With a Bachelor of Medicine or equivalent and full General Medical Council registration plus a license to practice,you will be passionate and committed to reproductive healthcare. You will ensure that all BPAS clients are treated in a professional and caring way. You will have experience of independent practice for any abortion procedures/gestations for which privileges are sought, and Knowledge of termination of pregnancy procedures & the assessment and management of complications

A good communicator you enjoy building strong working relationships across the business and enjoy maintaining such relationships as well.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership, guidance, & training to ensure adherence to BPAS clinical policies & procedures.
  • Act as a medical resource, offering expertise on clinical policies, suitability for treatment, & medical management.
  • Represent BPAS in external stakeholder meetings & contribute to medical input in service establishment & policy development.
  • Lead assessments & support performance improvement efforts for doctors & clinical staff.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, audits, & risk management processes.
  • Collaborate with other Clinical Directors to organise CPD meetings & contribute to clinical educational packages.

  • Carry out termination of pregnancy by the appropriate method to evacuate the products of conception and ensure complete abortion and in accordance with practicing privileges granted and BPAS guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Complete client consultation and pre-treatment assessment if needed and complete the statutory documentation
  • Assess and provide advice on the management of clients with medical or other conditions which may affect the surgical procedure
  • Be present in the operating theatre throughout the procedure and remain on side until the client has been assessed fit for discharge from recovery or passed to the care of another on-site doctor
  • Provide support, advice and guidance to nursing staff in the management of unexpected outcomes
  • Willing to travel to other sites and work additional hours as necessary. This role will cover all BPAS units in the North of England. There will also be the expectation to travel to head office locations (Leamington Spa & Furnival Street, London) when required.
