Job summary
We are currently looking for an experienced Head of Policy
and Cancer Insight to join us on a fixed-term basis. We will also consider applications from anybody wishing to work as a consultant or anybody wishing to undertake a secondment.Reporting to the Director
of Research, Services and Policy, your role will be to take responsibility for
continuing the development and delivery of our strategic objectives and leading
the Policy and Cancer Insight team.
Main duties of the job
As our Head of Policy and Cancer Insight, you will take responsibility for continuing the development and delivery of our strategic objectives and leading the cancer insight team to:
1) Develop and run a patient and public involvement function (PPI) for the Research, Services and Policy department to ensure views of people affected by cancer are used to shape our work. This may expand to cover the wider charity in the future.
2) Understand the Yorkshire Cancer Landscape, including local NHS priorities, to shape future strategy development and operational delivery within the current strategy.
3) Synthesise the data and evidence on strategic topics to inform our research, services and influencing work.
4) Bring together insights from Yorkshire data, topic specific data & evidence, PPI priorities, and NHS priorities to inform policy development, underpin charitable activity and to influence external partners at a local and national level.
5) Measure the Impact of charitable activity toward the delivery of our strategy.

- Oversee the production of cancer-related policies and use these to influence internal and external stakeholders, as well as ensuring correct use of key messages in public-facing health communications.
- Lead the development of a new PPI function within the charity to improve all areas of our work, but at a minimum, this will cover the Research, Services and Policy team.
- Oversee the collection and interpretation of information about cancer regionally and nationally that accurately depicts and reflects the Yorkshire cancer landscape.
- Oversee the production of insightful and informed reports and recommendations, including on behalf of external stakeholders.
- Ensure the impact of charitable activity is monitored and reported to the wider Charity and the Board of Trustees with reference to the charitys strategic ambitions.
- Take overall responsibility for annual impact reporting.
- Oversee work to estimate potential future impact achievable by the charity and for individual projects in relation to the strategy.
- Lead the development of an Influencing strategy with support from the Policy and Public Affairs Manager. Implement actions from the strategy to support the charitys strategic ambitions.
- Engage with regional and national decision-makers to influence decision-making for the benefit of people in Yorkshire.
- Maintain relationships with key stakeholders across Yorkshire and beyond, (e.g., within the Cancer Alliances across Yorkshire, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, the Association of Medical Research Charities, National policy groups such as One Cancer Voice, and the UK Lung Cancer Coalition).
- Lead, coach, and develop the Cancer Insight Team.
About You
To be considered for this role, you will need:
To be educated to a degree level or equivalent (ideally in public health, health policy, or other relevant subject/area) and have proven experience at a senior level in a relevant environment within the charity or public sector.
- An excellent track record of management and leadership.
- Substantial experience using data and evidence in a way that derives actionable insights and experience in tailoring this to different audiences.
- Experience in using patient and public views to establish priorities and underpin activity.
- Substantial experience in developing and maintaining strong relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the local cancer, or wider health, services landscape, and health system within England.
- Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to plan strategically to work towards deliverable outcomes.
- Excellent organisational, project management, and time management skills with the ability to prioritise work, handle conflicting demands, and meet tight deadlines with exceptional levels of accuracy maintained.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong background in analysing and presenting complex information and communicating this to a range of audiences including health experts, scientists, patients, and the wider public.
- Good radio, TV, and print media communication skills and an ability to represent the charity, including on potentially controversial topics.
