Main duties and responsibilities

1. Manage and lead the Family Reunion and Parenting Project

2. Plan, organise, coordinate and facilitate family reunion and parenting sessions in a way that responds appropriately to the needs of families from diverse backgrounds.

3. Ensure that all assessments, formulations and interventions are culturally competent.

4. Provide parenting interventions that have clear aims and objectives, using a variety of culturally competent approaches and techniques.

5. Manage and lead the Cultural Consultancy service.

Specific responsibilities

1. Help children and families/individuals identify practical strategies or other agencies or resources that might help them.

2. Liaise and communicate with other agencies/services where necessary and to refer children and families on as appropriate. Including to relevant statutory services and VCFSE resources.

3. Work jointly with colleagues from other statutory, voluntary sector and community agencies as agreed by the project to meet the needs of children, families and individuals from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

4. Act as a resource to statutory, VCFSE agencies for discussing cultural issues and the broad range of factors which affect families' mental and psychological health. To offer appropriate advice, information and awareness raising relevant to family/individual needs.

5. Provide appropriate advocacy on behalf of individuals, families or community groups.

6. Provide consultation, support and supervision to other Just Psychology staff members as appropriate.

7. Provide consultation and training to statutory and VCFSE agencies in relation to cultural issues and the mental health and psychological needs of children, families and individuals from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

8. Liaise with parents, families and staff from other agencies to complete referrals, identify the reasons for the referral, clarify concerns and expectations and agree respective roles and responsibilities.

9. Communicate effectively with staff in all agencies involved with the families including support workers, general practitioners, social services, education providers, user/carer groups to maximise the quality of support delivered to children, young people and families.

10. Monitor and evaluate the progress of children, parents and families involved with the project keeping accurate, comprehensive and timely records in line with professional and organisational policy and practice.

11. Exercise a high degree of independence, initiative and expertise in order to oversee the activities of the Family Reunion and Parenting project, providing support to the assistant psychologist team and trainee clinical or counselling psychologists on placement

12. Ensure that Safeguarding procedures are adhered to, recognising and taking action in relation to the safety of children and vulnerable adults where concerns and risks are identified.

13. Take part in regular supervision, practice development groups and training sessions to ensure good quality practice, up to date knowledge, skills and continuous professional development.

14. Ensure that administrative tasks of the project, including data collection, management and reporting, are completed

15. Develop mental health promotion materials and distribute to key organisations.

16. Lead on the overseeing and support of the Just Psychology Cultural Consultants, looking for appropriate opportunities to develop and promote the service

17. Contribute to funding applications as required.

18. Participate in the development, monitoring and evaluation of service improvements in own area

19. Pro-active in identifying and proposing changes to local procedures and working practices in own area and playing a significant role in implementation.

20. Maintain an active engagement with current developments in the field of psychology and related disciplines and utilise theory, evidence based literature and research to support practice in individual work and work with other team members.

21. Maintain and develop skills in the area of professional post-qualification training and clinical supervision.

22. Undertake formal research as needed

23. Undertake other duties as required by the Executive Director/Consultant Clinical Psychologist in relation to the implementation of the project.

25. Work within the relevant national professional practice guidelines from the HCPC, UKCP and other professional registration bodies and also within the policies of Just Psychology CIC.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996), as accredited by the BPS
• OR
• Post graduate training in psychotherapy or equivalent.
• Registration with appropriate professional body eg HCPC, UKCP.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

• Training in Narrative and solution focused approaches to working with children and families.
• Training in group work.

Experience

Essential

• Experience of working with children, young people and parents.
• Experience of working with cultural diversity including families from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.
• Experience of promoting the participation of children and families in service development and planning.
• Experience of working with complexity with regards mental health needs and family systems.
• Experience of facilitating groups.
• Knowledge of risk assessment and risk management.
• Evidence based practice relevant to the role.
• Audit and research methodology.
• Communicate complex and highly sensitive information effectively to a wide range of people.
• Experience of working with safeguarding issues.

Desirable

• Experience of delivering therapy in a variety of clinical models including CBT, Systemic therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy
• Experience of project management.
• Experience of working in VCFSE sector/ community psychology/ asset based community approaches.
• Experience of working with refugee/asylum seeking children and families.
• Experience of convening, chairing or participating actively in meetings involving families or community members.
• Experience of planning and delivering training events.
