Fixed Term from 1st October 2024 - 31st March 2025. 2 days per week (16 hours per week Monday & Tuesday)
We are seeking a Speciality Doctor to contribute specialist expertise in palliative medicine to our multi-disciplinary team and to drive forward excellence in patient care, in line with best practice and research. Working will be primarily at the hospice In-patient Unit. Successful candidate will play a key role in managing Inpatients at hospice and supporting multidisciplinary team.
This post will provide cover in the In-Patient Unit for two days per week to support senior doctors. The post holder will work with colleagues to further develop subspecialty links and collaborative working across all settings. Supporting patients to be cared for in their preferred place of care, facilitating smooth and rapid flows between sectors and meeting the standards set by an end-of-life care strategy will be the priorities for this post.
The successful candidate will be a medically qualified graduate, who has appropriate higher professional training and has wide general experience in Clinical Medicine.

multidisciplinary team to enhance and deliver excellent patient care

patients in In-patient Unit
To supplement the Hospice's
specialist and training grade doctors in the provision of palliative medicine
services to St Clare Hospice patients.
To deliver evidence based
palliative care to patients as well as take part in clinical audits and
research to inform practice
To educate Hospice and
non-hospice healthcare staff about Palliative care

St Clare
Hospice is an independent charity that provides a range of specialist
palliative care services for our local communities in Uttlesford, Harlow,
Epping and East Hertfordshire. The current medical team consists of a medical
director, three other consultants, honorary consultant in Psychiatry, two WTE
specialist doctors, one specialist registrar, three general practitioner
trainees and two foundation year doctors. Currently the Hospice services eight
inpatient beds. There are resources available for day therapy, outpatients,
chaplaincy, patient and family support and bereavement services.

To provide day
to day medical cover for inpatients at Hospice in accordance with current
policy and protocols together with the other non-consultant medical staff and
under the guidance of the consultant(s) in Palliative Medicine.
To participate in Inpatient and Hospice
multi-disciplinary team meetings and ward rounds.
To carry out daily management of in-patients,
including practical procedures such as venipuncture, intravenous infusions and
paracentesis.
To clerk patients on admission to the clinical
departments in St Clare Hospice.
To communicate with patients and their families and
provide adequate information and support.
To provide weekend cover (9 5) on a non-residential
basis (negotiable).
To ensure comprehensive hand-over to out of hours
medical staff to ensure seamless care.
To ensure the keeping of accurate and contemporaneous
records, both handwritten and electronic.
To participate in audit and research activities.
To participate in a regular appraisal of performance
and training needs.
To undertake Continuing Professional Development and
revalidation activities in accordance with prevailing requirements.
To participate in education and training activities
internally to the Hospice.
ON-CALL DUTIES:
It
is a negotiable commitment. The principal on call duty is for the Inpatient
Unit. The frequency is one in five
weekends (working from 9 to 5). Over the
weekend the predictable out of hours work includes reviewing patients on the
Inpatient Unit and clerking admissions. On call arrangements are regularly
reviewed.
APPRAISAL:
Appraisals and work plan
meetings will be held with a trained appraiser, in line with appraisal and
revalidation guidelines, and also in accordance with Hospices personnel
management.
MEDICAL
REPORT:
All
appointments to Hospice are subject to satisfactory Occupational Health
clearance, including relevant vaccinations.
POLICIES
AND PROCEDURES:
You are
expected to conduct your duties in accordance with Hospice policies and
procedures, available on SharePoint (Hospice intranet).
MEDICAL DEFENCE:
You are required to be fully
covered by Medical Defence insurance as a condition of employment. The Hospice
will reimburse the cost of the subscription for the period of your employment
on receipt of appropriate documentation.
