Job summary

Northpoint Wellbeing Service has been commissioned to run an innovative Therapeutic Community (Trauma Informed Group Support) pilot, as part of integrated primary care provision, for 18 months initially.

We envisage that this pilot will meet the needs of young people, who have experienced trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s), in a flexible and responsive way that is different to the current provision available. It increases the availability of trauma informed therapeutic provision within the city and will be delivered at accessible venues.

Leeds has a high student population with many young people living away from their home networks and support for the first time. This cohort presents some particular challenges to professionals currently working within primary care; in particular the need to contain and support young people experiencing distress who have experienced a number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) and past trauma.

The pilot provision will be underpinned by the following trauma-informed principles:

  • Safety

  • Trustworthiness and transparency

  • Peer support

  • Collaboration and utility

  • Empowerment, voice and choice

  • Cultural, historical and gender issues

Main duties of the job

The post holder will uphold the principles and structure of the model, the primary aim being to enable service users to effectively engage in both the preparatory and group phases. You will help group members work on interpersonal relationships, destructive behaviours and improve engagement with local services. The postholder will be open to developing the role in the context of service development and improvement The postholder will regularly attend the groups and participate in group supervision and team meetings.

Main duties:

  • To attend the DTC group, team meetings and/or staff group supervision on a weekly basis.

  • To help create and maintain a therapeutic community culture in the service.

  • To assist and facilitate the healthy management of group dynamic.

  • To work with other staff and group members to help to develop and maintain the Therapeutic Community Group structure and culture.

  • To bring lived experience of personality difficulties to help bridge communication and engagement between the staff delivery team and group members.

  • To act as a role model within the group and maintain ground rules.

  • To help when group struggles or problems arise, working with the feelings these difficulties can evoke and use lived experience to understand feedback and its impact.
