Job summary

Northpoint are looking for a skilled and qualified mental health practitioner with experience of working with schools and education settings. The service is well established and has successfully strengthened links between schools and mental health services. The post has become vacant due to internal promotion of the previous postholder.

Main duties of the job

The main focus of the role will be to build capacity in the education workforce by helping school staff to feel more confident in supporting students and pupils with their emotional wellbeing.

The postholder will also help schools to access suitable resources, and to signpost and refer to appropriate services including Calderdale Open Minds (CAMHS).

The organisation operates to high professional standards, is an accredited service of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and works to the ethical frameworks of BACP and BABCP.

Since becoming involved in Calderdale CAMHS in 2014, Northpoint have helped to make mental health services more accessible for children, young people and families. We have also reduced waiting times, improved outcomes, and increased the range of support options (including digital treatment).

The role involves five main areas of work:

1. Consultancy, case discussion, support and specialist training for school staff.

2. Signposting and referral guidance to school staff

  • Professional qualification relevant to the role (i.e. therapeutic qualification, social work, mental health nursing, or similar)

Desirable

  • Post-qualification training
  • Membership/registration of relevant professional body

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in schools/education settings
  • or
  • Experience of working closely with schools/education staff
  • Experience of supporting children and young people with emotional health issues (this may be in a school setting, CAMHS/young peoples mental health service, family service, or similar)
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Experience of multi-agency collaborative working
  • Experience of monitoring performance & demonstrating outcomes

Desirable

  • Experience of working with parents/carers
  • Experience of assessing and managing risk
  • Experience of young peoples mental health/CAMHS services

Skills, knowledge and ability

Essential

  • Knowledge of the pressures and initiatives faced by school staff
  • Good knowledge of mental health & neurodevelopmental issues such as autism and ADHD.
  • Ability to differentiate between mental health and other issues (e.g. conduct, behaviour)
  • Commitment to inclusivity, equality and diversity
  • Ability to motivate, guide and support staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to think clinically/therapeutically about client need
  • Proven change management and team working skills
  • Ability to write concise and informative reports and letters
  • Good IT skills and ability to use Word, Outlook, Power Point etc as well as video conferencing tools such as Zoom/MS Teams
  • Understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding/child protection
  • Positive and proactive attitude
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Ability to mediate successfully/resolve conflict situations
