Job summary
The available job is flexible for the right candidate, from one day a week to full time. This post offers an opportunity for doctors wishing to have further experience in palliative and end of life care, from a GP wishing to develop a special interest in Palliative Care, a trust grade/IMT doctor aiming to gain further experience prior to specialising, or an experienced palliative care doctor.
You will provide medical care for a variety of inpatient beds (10 in total), including symptom control and end of life care. You will have the opportunity to participate in research/audit projects, an option to create and present teaching to junior doctors and nursing staff, and develop your own knowledge through the strong team setting. On-call duties at Alice House are non-resident. For weekend on-calls, a daily visit would be required. There may be opportunities for additional ad hoc non-resident on-calls.
Doctors who have previously worked in the NHS can still contribute to the NHS Pension Scheme as long as it is within 12 months after leaving the NHS.
Revalidation will also be provided through the Hospices working partnership with the local NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job
- To provide medical care for all patients of Alice House Hospice across all clinical areas and play a key role as a member of the Multidisciplinary Team.
- To provide treatment for all patients within Hospice care across all clinical areas to ensure a high standard of medical care provision is delivered.
- To provide effective medical advice and support over the telephone ensuring effective palliative care support is available within the community.
- To play an effective key role within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that effective holistic care of a high standard is available to all patients.
- Participation in a non-residential on call medical rota, to ensure 24-hour medical support.
- To liaise with other health care professionals in hospitals and communities to ensure seamless provision of palliative care.
- To support teaching programmes and training of junior staff and students in palliative care to encourage high standards of practice.
- To commit to continuous professional development to extend knowledge and skills in specialist palliative care.
- To be committed to revalidation and appraisal processes.
- To participate in audit and research projects.
- To play an effective role in delivering actions from the Clinical Governance Group to ensure high standards of care are delivered and take an active role in audit and research projects carried out by the Hospice.
About us
If you are a GP wishing to gain more interest in Palliative Care, you will work alongside experienced doctors, including a Consultant in Palliative Medicine, to develop specialist palliative care knowledge and skills that would be invaluable in primary care. The Consultant is employed by North Tees & Hartlepool NHS Trust and works at the Hospice 4 sessions per week, supported by two Staff Grade Doctors, a Foundation Year 2 Doctor rotating on a four-monthly basis and the placement of a Specialist Registrar in Palliative Medicine. For the right candidate, the Hospice will support any relevant Continuous Professional Development in order to aid career progression.
