Job summary

This posthas been funded by the South-East London (SEL) ICS Level Training Hub todevelop clinical placements in General Practice for pre-registration nursingstudents and nursing associates. Thepostholder will support Practice Educators in South East London (SEL) and thePlace Based Placements Team, who are working to deliver expansion of theplacement capacity and capability of the primary care workforce.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work with key stakeholders to identify potential new placements within Primary Care for pre-registration nursing students. This will include day to day activities relating to pre-registration nursing placements and placements for trainee nursing associates, utilising effective information technology, and creating and maintaining databases and registers. The postholder will use effective communication and negotiation skills to facilitate a collaborative approach across South East London.

Over the last 12 months locality training hubs, of which there are six in South East London (Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark), have formalised their collaborative working arrangements to align with the operating guidance from HEE. Bromley Education and Training Hub (BETH) was nominated as the STP Level Training Hub with the management lead being provided by Bromley and the clinical lead being provided by Bexley.

Locality training hubs continue to provide localintelligence, support and development. Locality training hubs continue to run thesupport forums for nurses, Practice Managers, etc and work with PCNs onworkforce planning.

Training hubs are involved in rolling out preceptorship,training placement quality management, working with practices, PCNs anduniversities to ensure we can offer the best training posts to a wide range ofclinical and non-clinical professionals, from GP trainees and student nurses,to trainee nurse associates and work experience students. Whether it is supporting a Health Care Assistant throughenrolling on a Nursing Associate apprenticeship, upskilling a practice nurse orplanning workforce at a PCN level, the training hub is the point of contact. Each locality training hub employs lead nurses and worksvery closely with HEE and local HEIs to support the training of the nursingteam across the spectrum of experience. Introduction of the ICS level traininghub has strengthened these links and provided more opportunities forcollaboration.

Role Purpose:There is universal acceptancethat the nursing workforce is at huge risk, especially within primary care atthe present time and that this risk is only accelerating due to the impact ofboth time passing and more recently the Covid-19 pandemic and the pressures puton the healthcare system.This is a strategic and operationalrole combining leadership, planning and delivery skills to expand nursingplacement capacity across the six boroughs, working with HEIs and theUniversity of Greenwich in particular, to redesign and reinvigorate theCommunity Pathway.There is an opportunity for asenior nurse to come on board with the ICS Level Training Hub to work on theredesign of the Community Pathway and to work with locality training hubs toexpand the placements offered across primary care. This will also involvenetworking with providers across the six boroughs to build collaborative linksand join up the educational pathway for nursing placements.

The successful applicant(s) willbe a General Practice Nurse (GPN) with extensive experience in supporting thenursing workforce and an experienced system leader. They will feel passionatelyabout equipping and enabling the next generation of nurses with primary care asthe first destination career choice. They will have excellent track record indelivering on projects and initiatives as well as engaging and working flexiblywith a wide range of stakeholders.

The post holder will be a coremember of the developing ICS Level Training Hub team and will work with a rangeof clinicians and managers. They will be based with the ICS Level Training Hubin Bromley (the Bromley Education and Training Hub BETH) but will workclosely with all SEL locality training hubs.

GeneralDuties and Responsibilities

1.Clinical Nurse Leadership and Strategy.

Work with colleagues across the 6 SEL boroughs as well as SELCCG/ICS and Health Education England todevelop an overall nursing placement strategy for General Practice Nursing inSouth East London that encompasses all the current and emerging programmes andinitiatives and addresses current challenges and ensuring alignment to the 10point plan.Promote and advocate for General Practice Nursing within GeneralPractice, Primary Care Networks, Federations and in Borough Partnerships,representing GPNs and the SEL Training Hubs at key strategic local, regionaland national meetings.Develop delivery plans for each aspect of the work.Take a lead in delivery of these programmes working alongsidelocal borough based nursing and workforce leads.Keep abreast of relevant and emerging developments which have animpact on General Practice Nursing and take a lead in progressing futureopportunities.Collaborate with nurses from across organisations includingcommunity, mental health and acute to promote the role of nursing and todevelop educational opportunities across all areas of healthcare.

2.Nurse Education

Build capacity to support learning in practice settings includingsupport for existing and potential nurse assessors and supervisors tofacilitate pre-registration nurse placements in primary care liaising withlocal Higher Education Institutions.Work closely with other leads within the SEL Training Hubs todevelop and expand placement capacity across the area.Working with Borough Nurse Leads and practice managers toformulate induction programmes for pre-registration nurses.Coordinate the work of the borough based nurse educators ensuringthat there is a clear programme of support and education for practice nurses.Support locality training hubs in the recruitment and support ofapprenticeship nursing associates, building on the good work done in eachlocality to date.

3.Nurse Career Pathway Development.

Oversee the Trainee Nursing Associate Programme in collaborationwith locality training hubs ensuring that it supports development of theseroles within general practice.Work to increase the number of final year student placements inGeneral Practice.

4.Mobility

The ICS Training Hub Lead Nurse for Workforcewill be based in the BETH offices though will need to attend meetings in otherlocations.
