Lead Pharmacist Secondary Care Foundation Pharmacist Training

Job summary

The post holder will work strategically and closely with colleagues across the system designing, developing, piloting and implementing the NHS requirements for transformation of the training programme for the pharmacist foundation training year.

The key objectives and activities are:

  • To ensure all trusts in Lancashire and South Cumbria are compliant with the GPhC standards for foundation year training.
  • To redesign and describe the process for foundation year training and make sustainable for existing teams to deliver in subsequent years, including a core curriculum.
  • To ensure a robust and sustainable model for DPP support.
  • To carry out in year evaluation and make recommendations for prescribing environments for future years.
  • To harmonise inductions across trusts, with a do once approach for delivery and training.
  • Develop a robust plan for multisector rotations for foundation training for 2027-28 and rotations beyond the foundation year.
  • To support the current education teams within the trusts

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

The strategic development and implementation of new training programmes for foundation year pharmacists across trusts in Lancashire and South Cumbria, taking into account the new Initial Education and Training Standards (IETS).

The strategic development, piloting, and introduction of longitudinal ward-based placements.

The strategic development, piloting, and implementation of new models of supervision for independent prescribing pharmacist learners with the introduction of multi-sector placements.

Co-ordinate practice research and audit activities to support the development of high-quality education and training programmes.

Provide leadership and advice for the trust Pharmacy Education Teams, DPPs and DSs around the new standards and requirements for foundation trainee pharmacists.

About us

The Lancashire and South Cumbria Primary Care Training Hub (L&SC PCTH) has been developed to drive the NHSE Workforce, Training & Education directorate deliverables outlined in both the Common Operational Guidance and Quality Framework.

The 5 hospital trusts across Lancashire and South Cumbria (Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire and South Cumbria Foundation Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust) have pooled resources to recruit a pharmacist to lead on the implementation of the new Initial Education and Training Standards (IETS) and the changes required to transform training programmes for foundation year pharmacists in 2025/26 and beyond. 10. Ensure purposeful inductions are conducted on-line once across all trusts, for example U&Es interpretation, including developing a programme of relevant content to be delivered centrally.

11. Scope out, test, evaluate, develop and describe a detailed process for existing teams to follow to ensure sustainability for future years.

12. Work with other stakeholders to develop sustainable DPP support.

13. Write complex reports around the training requirements and innovative approach to future developments for training for foundation year pharmacist trainees, following the pilots and implementation.

14. Assess the on-going quality and effectiveness of the foundation pharmacist trainee training programme using, for example, audits, surveys, and evaluation and use the results to analyse, identify and use judgement to implement improvements or changes based on the findings.
