Job summary

Barrow Together PCN have a fantastic opportunity for a Women's Health Nurse Associate to join our team, we are looking for a Registered Nursing Associate to work as part of our Nursing team. This involves assisting in the delivery of a high standard of care to patients attending for Sexual, reproductive and HIV health care. The ideal candidate will already have knowledge of Women's Health and sexually transmitted infections. The role will involve face to face interactions with patients alongside the nursing team.

The working hours will be predominantly out of hours, evenings and weekends.

As this specialised service develops there may be the scope to expand to other services.

Main duties of the job

  • The Role of the Nursing Associate is to be responsible for delivering high quality, patient centred, compassionate care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, or other registered healthcare professional for patients attending for sexual, reproductive and HIV health care. With a focus on promoting health.

  • The role encompasses clinical duties including direct patient care and having the ability to work without direct supervision, at times delivering care independently in line with the individuals care plan.

  • Be an accountable professional, working within the parameters of the Nurse Associate role ,as per NMC guidance, and your scope of competence, accessing clinical and care advice as needed.

  • Carry out specific clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction of a registered nurse or other registered healthcare professional, dependent on the setting. Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS values.

  • Contribute to the planning of care delivery in association with the Registered Nurse.

  • Contribute to on-going assessments recognising when it is necessary to refer to others for reassessment and action.

  • Demonstrate the ability to recognise the deteriorating patient or other situations that require escalation to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice.

  • Implement and evaluate individual care / treatment plans.

  • Be an accountable professional, working within the parameters of the Nurse Associate role, as per NMC guidance, and your scope of competence, accessing clinical and care advice as needed.

  • Carry out specific clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction of a registered nurse or other registered healthcare professional, dependent on the setting. Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS values.

  • Other aspects include housekeeping and administration duties which involve overseeing the maintenance of a safe environment for both patients and staff.

  • Work as part of a designated clinical team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient.

  • Contribute to the planning of care delivery in association with the Registered Nurse.

  • Contribute to on-going assessments recognising when it is necessary to refer to others for reassessment and action.

Undertake a range of agreed clinical skills once trained and deemed competent including:

  • Venepuncture and phlebotomy skills including HIV Point of Care Testing Urinalysis.

  • Pregnancy testing.

  • Taking patient observations and measurements including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight as required.

  • Staining and reading microscopy slides.

  • Managing and processing specimens.

  • Chaperoning and assisting clinicians with examination and procedures for patients.

  • Speculum examination to obtain samples e.g. for cervical smear taking (cervical cytology), trichomonas test of cure, gonorrhoea culture.

  • Taking genital samples.

  • Care of HIV outpatients including blood taking, cervical smear taking, recording vital signs and physical details, measuring BMD using the heel scanner.

  • Completing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis follow up consultations.

  • Intramuscular injections.

  • Be competent in giving Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines according to existing PCN SOP and national guidelines.

  • Administer medicine within the limitations of the role, in line with scope of practice in accordance with NMC Code and PCN policy. This will include the administration of oral, intramuscular, topical and subdermal medication when deemed competent.

  • To competently administer treatment for a range of sexually transmitted infections under PSD according to PCN and national guidelines.

  • Administer medications in line with PCN medicine management policy.

  • Demonstrate the ability to recognise the effects of medicines, side effects, drug sensitivity, contraindications adverse reactions and allergies.

  • Responsible for contributing to the clinical environment which promotes a positive patient experience and care, promoting privacy and dignity at all times.

  • Educate patients and families about sexual health & HIV related illness, conditions and medication under the direct / indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.

Training and Education

  • Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.

  • Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
