Weldmar Hospicecare is an independent charity that provides
specialist end of life care to patients and those that are important to them
throughout Dorset. This care is given in the comfort of patients own homes by
Weldmar Community Nurses and our Weldmar at Home Team, via Day Services held
across the county or as inpatients at our hospice in Dorchester. Our team of
dedicated staff and volunteers ensure that we can continue to support patients
through one of lifes most difficult journeys. We work closely with other
health care providers including the NHS to ensure that our patients receive the
highest possible care.
We do receive some funding from the NHS but the majority of
our income is generated by our fundraising and retail teams, which plays a
vital part in securing income to fund our care, both now and in the future.
Role of Trustee
Weldmars Board of Trustees are collectively responsible for
supporting the Chief Executive in providing vision, direction and leadership
enabling Weldmar to achieve its strategic goals and objectives. The board are
accountable for the governance of Weldmar and must ensure that it operates in a
manner that:

Complies with its Memorandum and Articles of
Association and all applicable legislation and regulations;

Uses it assets and resources exclusively for
charitable purposes in pursuance of its objectives;

Ensures strong financial stability;

Pays due
attention to charity and company law;

Upholds,
monitors, protects and enhances the reputation and ethos of Weldmar.
Trustees must work together at all times
and act in the best interest of Weldmar. Trustees must not pursue personal or
sectional interests at the expense of Weldmar and must declare any conflict of
interest.
Responsibilities of Trustees:
1) Understand Weldmars aims and objectives
as set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association and ensure that it
operates in accordance with them.
2) Take responsible steps to ensure that
Weldmar operates within the law, particularly with regard to the Charities and
Company Act.
3) Set the strategy and understanding the
strategic management of Weldmar
4) Understanding the difference between the
role the Trustees pay in governance, developing and agreeing the strategic
direction of Weldmar, and that of the senior management team in applying that
strategy to day to day operations.
5) To ensure proper accounting records are
kept.
6) To ensure the effective and efficient
administration of Weldmar.
7) Protect and manage the property of the
charity.
8)
Take special care when investing the funds of Weldmar.
9)
Always acting with integrity and avoiding personal conflicts of interest and
misuse of charity funds or assets. Using charitable funds and assets reasonably
and only in furtherance of Weldmars objectives.
10) Monitoring key performance indicators
on a regular basis and holding the Chief Executive accountable for outcomes.
11) Ensure that the Chair reviews the Chief
Executives performance and development annually.
Collective:
1) Approving the rolling 5-year strategic
plan annually and monitoring progress against it.
2)
Approving the annual budget and monitoring progress against it.
3) Approving the annual report and
accounts.
4) Reviewing the risk register and
monitoring risks faced by the Trust.
5)
To help to identify, recruit and induct new Board members, the Chair and the
Chief Executive.
Individual:
1) Attending meetings of Trustees. Six
meetings are held each year.
2) Playing an active part in the Trustees
meetings and deliberations.
3) Exercising due care and attention and
using reasonable skill in dealing with the charitys affairs.
4) Using own skills, knowledge and
experience to help the Trustees reach sound decisions.
5)
Taking the lead in any Trustees activities where the Trustee has special
knowledge.
6) Sitting on Board sub committees when
required.
7) Approving the charitys policies.
8)
To participate, if required, in the disciplinary, grievance or other processes
as required of the Hospice.
Induction
There is a process for the induction of
Trustees, an information pack provided and each new Trustee is offered a
specified buddy who is a current Trustee on this Board.
Training and development
Trustees are expected to attend a Hospice Induction day.
Trustees are expected to attend
appropriate Trustee training.
Additional training may be provided and Trustees will be expected to attend.
Trustees have an annual appraisal with the
Chair.
