Job summary

Main duties of the job

We are currently seeking to recruit a Band 6 Complementary Therapist to take on a lead role providing complementary therapy in our Wellbeing Centre.

Job Summary:

· To plan, deliver, review, monitor and evaluate the Complementary Therapy services in order to provide the best possible care ensuring the patient and their family are at the centre of decision making in regard to their care.

· To ensure the Complementary Therapy service is delivered in a safe manner and is developed in line with best practice guidance.

· To lead and inform policy development at the Hospice in relation to the delivery of safe and effective complementary therapy.

· To assist in the recruitment, training, support and supervision of trained Complementary Therapy Volunteers

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Professional

  1. To deliver safe effective and sensitive complementary therapies for patients and their family members following referral and assessment.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for patients and liaise with the wider clinical team in relation to treatment plans for those under the clinical care of SRH.
  3. Communicate effectively with members of the Wellbeing Centre and with the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
  4. To ensure that practice within the complementary therapy service is evidence based and follows best practice.
  5. To remain up to date on any legislative changes that may affect the service.
  6. To ensure that all qualifications and registration with relevant professional/regulatory bodies are up to date.

Leadership and Management

  1. Support the Clinical Director in developing a strategy for development of complementary therapy services across the Hospice.
  2. Provide dynamic and effective day to day management of the complementary therapy service.
  3. Develop and maintain an understanding of national and local regulations, guidance and best practice in Complementary Therapy, and use this understanding to measure, benchmark and continually improve services for patients, carers, families and staff.
  4. Play an active role in advising the Senior Management Team (SMT) of appropriate issues.
  5. Develop and agree effective mechanism for measuring, monitoring and evaluating the quality of service provided.
  6. Ensure that relevant information is recorded in patient notes/records for those under the clinical care of the hospice, together with measuring satisfaction and outcomes of other related activities.
  7. Develop effective links with other local and national providers of Complementary Therapy service.
  8. Proactively manage and report on the management risk within the Complementary Therapy service.
  9. Develop the role of volunteers within the Complementary Therapy team to support Wellbeing attendees.
  10. Recruit, induct, train and manage Complementary Therapy Volunteers ensuring that quality is maintained via regular supervision.

Operational Responsibilities

  1. To develop and implement an efficient, effective and appropriate system for referral for complementary therapy.
  2. Deliver complementary therapy as required and ensure a consistent and responsive service to the In-Patient Unit, The Wellbeing Centre and Hospice staff (as appropriate).
  3. On occasion, attend and contribute to the weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings to identify and support the needs of patients, carers and staff.
  4. To undertake assessment of those referred for complementary therapy and make recommendations for appropriate treatment giving regard to contra-indications.
  5. To plan, implement and evaluate treatment plans.
  6. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and complete records of patient assessment and care in accordance with Hospice and legislative requirements.
  7. To ensure efficient and safe control, supply and storage of resources (e.g. oils and lotions).
  8. Undertake regular supervision of Complementary Therapy Volunteers.
  9. Represent the Hospice at external events as required.
  10. Proactively and regularly report to the Clinical Director on progress against any strategic plans, budgets, personal objectives and issues within areas of responsibility.
  11. Access supervision and support as part of professional practice.

Educational Responsibilities

  1. Participate in the delivery of training and education to staff and volunteers as required.
  2. Ensure that all Complementary Therapy Volunteers are competent to deliver care.
