An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 7 Inpatient
Unit Sister to join our friendly IPU team at St Raphael’s Hospice. We are
looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual, with the ability to think
creatively in terms of staff development, as the needs of our patients become
more complex.

To guide and work alongside the
Inpatient team ensuring the provision of the highest standard of nursing care
and clinical excellence to patients and families
To foster a supportive, open and
positive environment for staff, encouraging initiative and facilitating evidence and research-based practice.

Responsibilities
- Co-ordinating and overseeing the clinical
practice of the IPU nursing team
- Providing advice, support and guidance
for new and inexperienced IPU staff
- Working in close liaison with the Band 6 nurses
in the management of the IPU, taking the lead in the day to day people
management
- To lead and guide all IPU staff, ensuring
effective use of nursing resources
- Leading by example in facilitating and
maintaining good inter-disciplinary communication
- Being aware of changing practice and
innovation within nursing and palliative care, practice development and
educational initiatives
Clinical
- To demonstrate clinical excellence and a
high standard of nursing practice within the field of specialist palliative
care and to act as a resource and role model to colleagues
- To maintain effective communication with
all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- To assume a shared responsibility,
alongside the Band 6 nurses, for the IPU environment in a manner which
reflects the hospice vision and values
- To work alongside less experienced and
new IPU staff, offering support and guidance in order to facilitate their
professional development within the field of specialist palliative care
- To provide and/or oversee mentorship for
student nurses and post registration nurses during educational placement
on the IPU
- To take responsibility for safe custody
and administration of drugs in accordance with the hospice policy, legal
requirements and the NMC guidelines
- To support and supervise IPU-based
volunteers
- To ensure a high standard of nursing
documentation and confidentiality of all patient information
Management
- To provide the nursing staff with
consistent and supportive leadership through effective supervision,
mentorship and appraisal
- To assume the management responsibility
of the IPU nursing team with the assistance of the Band 6 nurses
- To organise and facilitate regular IPU
meetings in order to ensure communication of relevant information to all IPU
staff
- To oversee the compilation of ‘off-duty’
rotas, ensuring adequate staffing levels and ‘skill mix’ and paying
attention to the effective use of nursing resources
- To participate in recruitment, selection
and induction of new staff
- To attend meetings such as Heads of Departments,
Clinical Heads of Departments, Quality Improvement Committee, Infection
Control and Health and Safety
- To ensure bank staff and permanent staff
time sheets are checked and authorised as necessary plus the checking and
authorising of annual leave requests

- Completion of or working towards a Degree
- Experience of leadership/management at Band 6 or above in a Hospice and/or oncology/community establishment
