Job summary

The Brandon Centre is looking for an experienced sexual and reproductive healthcare nurse to provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised sexual health care to patients without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team. The successful applicant will provide expert sexual healthcare, using clinical guidance, patient group directions (PGDs) and non-medical independent prescribing as agreed.

The post holder will use advanced assessment and specialist skills to independently manager patients attending our service and support and deputise for the Head of Sexual Health in the management of the Sexual Health service. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings. To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and to provide cover for any area specified acting as professional role model providing direct and indirect clinical care, teaching and research.

- Mental Health Services including individual Counselling & Psychotherapy for young people, Systemic Integrative Treatment for families using a range of evidence-based therapies and therapeutic work and therapeutic outreach work in community settings

- Sexual Health Services including contraception, drop in and outreach sessions

- Clinical Training and Consultancy including healthy living, parent programmes and other group work

MAIN DUTIES

Clinical/Professional

Using advanced clinical skills assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, providing specialist advice and actively seeking evidence based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of patients attending for sexual health needs

To issue medication and /or administer medication/vaccinations for patients attending Sexual Health Service where the post holder is qualified as an Independent Nurse Prescriber or adhering legally to patient group directions (PGDs). There will be a requirement to undertake the non-medical prescribing course as part of this role, if not already achieved

Maintain effective links with educational establishments, professional bodies and other specialist units in order to deliver the most effective treatment and care.

Work with the Head of sexual Health to effect continuous service improvement and compliance with Care Quality Commission Standards.

To link with the wider Safeguarding leads, ensuring that safeguarding of both children and adults is a priority for the service, ensuring training is in place for staff and that any information from local and national safeguarding forums are disseminated to the team

Act as a clinical expert within Brandon Centre; this will involve dissemination of specialist skills and knowledge to others and develop in house training

Lead in clinical supervision and ensuring the service develops staff in accordance with Brandon Centres appraisal scheme

Keep up to date with developments in nursing practice through personal developments plans, training and education and act as a role model to ensure the delivery of nursing care is at highest possible level to meet patient care

Work within the Brandon Centre policies and procedures and other instruments of statutory legislation to ensure safe practice of self and others. To adhere to NMC Guidelines for Professional practice

Monitor the quality-of-service provision and action audit information to achieve agreed standards and contribute to customer care initiatives. This will include the development and utilisation of local action plans.

To promote and improve on patient experience.

Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the NMC and Brandon Centre standard (including electronic records) and implement audits of records to measure and evaluate care provision.

Management

Represent in absence of the Head of Sexual Health in senior leadership team and Brandon Centre forum as required e.g., Quality Safety Risk Committee, Clinical Leadership meeting, Senior Leadership Team meetings, Board Meetings

To support Head of Sexual Health in line managing the sexual health team, adhering to Brandon Centre appraisal guidance and provide professional leadership

To ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix are in place to reflect changing workload and needs of patients

Be actively involved in staff education and development, including utilising appropriate learning opportunities and to act as a mentor and resource for nursing and Sexual Health support workers, new starters and trainees and unqualified members of the nursing team.

Maintain a personal, professional profile, identifying role and skill developments in line with the Scope of Professional Practice.

To contribute to local and national networks and be active within specialty interest groups and forums

To support recruitment, training, development and deployment of staff, maintaining clear organisational structure, identifying lines of accountability, responsibility and communication within the service.

To work in conjunction with the Head of Sexual Health to be responsible for the regular appraisal and clinical supervision of staff

To work in conjunction with the Head of Sexual Health in the reporting, investigation and management of incidents and complaints in accordance with Brandon Centre policy or as directed by the Head of Sexual Health

To maintain and ensure efficient and effective use of supplies, provisions and equipment for the clinic within the designated budget.

Maintain accurate records and contribute to the service information by submitting data as required by the service, Brandon Centre, CAMISH Network, CCG and Department of Health.
