Job summary
Lead the Finance team at Social Interest Group as the Head of Finance, supporting the Director of Finance and Resource, and other Senior Leadership Team persons and teams, to support and implement new initiatives to further the organisations finance department. The role will be varied so you have the opportunity to get stuck right in and make a difference!
Main duties of the job
ABOUT THE ROLE
The role will support the Director of Finance & Resources, as well as the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and other Operational areas within the organisation with financial information, guidance, and analysis as required. The role will require hands-on technical capabilities and the ability to implement new initiatives to further the organisations efficiency, as well as resolve any challenges in a pro-active manner, providing support to other areas of the business as required. The role will primarily:
- Take the lead on the presentation of the management accounts to the SLT,
- The preparation of the quarterly forecasts,
- Managing the year end accounts and audit process
- Assist on the preparation of annual budgets.
The Head of Finance will be responsible for the full oversight, management and monitoring of the finance team, ensuring processes and policies are followed to the standards of Social Interest Group, our subsidiaries, and stakeholders.
The role will be Hybrid, with at least 2 days in Central Office (Islington).

The finance team are a tight-knit team, reporting to the Director of Finance and Resource, you will manage a Senior Finance Officer and two Management Accountants. there are also 3 Finance Officer who are line managed by the Senior Finance Officer.Coming into this role, you will have full visibility over the team and will work together to ensure our organisational targets and deadlines are met.

We're looking for a Head of Finance who holds excellent interpersonal, organisation, and planning skills with the ability to motivate and guide others. You will be driven to effectively communicate ideas, plans, and directions to a diverse range of stakeholders across the organisation. Ideally you will be keen to problem solve, think outside the box, and can demonstrate initiative. OVERVIEW OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Management
- Provide high quality support and line management to staff, responsible for management of the full employee lifecycle.
- Proactively embed a culture of learning, development, and evaluation.
- Develop the skills and capabilities of your team, working collaboratively with the rest of the wider organisation.
Operational
- Review and monitor monthly management accounts prepared by the team. This can include balance sheet reconciliations, analysis of financial performance for all Group Companies.
- Budget Management: Review annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for the organisation to ensure optimal accuracy and reliability, providing high level analysis of these to the SLT and Board of Trustees.
- Monitor and manage the finance budget, preparing business case justifications and cost/benefit analysis as required.
- Develop the team and ensure policies and processes are put in place organisation wide.
- Prepare and deliver high quality financial reports and insights.
- Preparation of charity SORP compliant annual financial statements and a comprehensive audit file ready for review by auditors, work closely with external auditors to ensure compliance.
- Prepare the Group VAT return, and work with other functions within the organisation to make appropriate returns and payments, for example with HMRC and pension providers.
- Check and authorise fortnightly BACs payments and other transactions.
- Support with the day to day duties as provided across the finance team.
- Build strong internal and external relationships across the organisation.
- Carry out other duties as required within the role.
Other responsibilities than those described above may be required to be undertaken from time to time and will be expected to be performed to as long as it is within the capability and level of the position. Please refer to the JDPS attached for more information.
KEY CRITERIA
What we are looking for:
- Qualified Accountant (CCAB or Equivalent)
- IT Proficiency, ability to learn new software programs, advanced knowledge in Microsoft including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to utilise online software including Excel to create, and monitor data and convert this into reports
- Ability to manage complex budgets, ensuring value for money
- Able to work to deadlines, and prioritise tasks and workload
What we would like, but not essential:
- Experience within a similar role and duties
- Experience within a leadership/management role in finance including the development of effective short and long term strategies
- In-depth knowledge of core financial processes such as purchase to pay and financial accounts
- Experience within the not-for-profit sector, with an understanding of current issues faced by the sector
- Proven ability to interact at Chief Executive/Director/Board Level
- Working for housing association
- Ability to create and deliver presentations and reports to various teams including Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees
- Knowledge of omni ledger financial packages
