Job summary

Our Trustees have set an ambitious vision for the future of Bury Hospice, and as Director of Clinical Services, you will play a crucial role in translating this vision into reality. This exciting role will involve:

  • Leading a comprehensive review of our clinical services to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our local community and reflects best practice and innovative approaches to palliative care
  • Contributing significantly to the development of our new hospice strategy for 2025-2028, ensuring a clear clinical focus and measurable outcomes
  • Playing a leading role in the strategic leadership of palliative care and end-of-life services across the Bury system and Greater Manchester, fostering collaboration and driving continuous improvement

Main duties of the job

Bury Hospice provides end of life care to local residents. This invaluable service has the opportunity to be expanded and further shaped to meet the needs of our local residents and wider stakeholders.   • Work with the Board, Chief Executive and other Directors to develop strategy, business plans and policies for the hospice, which supports the provision of the highest standards of care for patients and carers.
  • Deputise for the CEO.
  • Promote and support partnership working internally and externally to benefit patients, carers, staff and volunteers and the wider community.
  • Report on all areas of responsibility to the Chief Executive and through agreed governance structures.
  • Act as a positive role model who promotes team working, respect, innovation and excellence.
  • Plan and develop clinical services and roles with increasing emphasis on local and national strategies, in conjunction with the CEO; working to fit them in with the business plan and strategic direction of the hospice.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, develop and deliver clinical services which support and enable appropriate commissioning discussions.
  • Seek opportunities for system collaboration where possible.
  • Collaborate with other service providers and statutory and voluntary bodies to develop and coordinate a service approach to meet palliative care needs of local communities.
  • Promote and act in accordance with the values and behaviours of Bury Hospice. Be the CQC registered manager for the organisation.
  • Be the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer for the organisation.
  • Support the clinical leads with Caldicott guardian responsibilities.
  • Safeguarding Lead for the organisation.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, develop and negotiate commissioning arrangements with ICBs and other commissioning bodies or organisations.
  • Provide assurance to the Board on any information governance risks.

  • Registered Healthcare Professional.
  • Masters degree or equivalent experience.
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification. Advance Care Planning Training.
  • ENB 285/931 or 237 equivalent experience (Oncology course/Palliative Care course/Care of dying adult course).
  • ENB 998 or equivalent experience (Mentorship).

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience managing specialty/ ward or department.
  • Proven experience of managing change and developing practice.
  • Auditing standards of practice.
  • Experience of managing budgets.
  • Experience or training in carrying out appraisals.
  • Application of evidence to practice.
  • Evidence of multi-professional working.
  • Understanding and evidence of application of the NMC and other professional codes of conduct.

Desirable

  • Experience of writing policies.
  • Experience of developing business cases.
  • Experience in managing major change.
