Newcastle General Practice Services Ltd

GP Clinical Supervisor in the Pharmacy Hub

The closing date is 30 June 2025

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the team, with responsibility for providing clinical supervision and influence on the delivery of high-quality pharmacy services and patient experience.

The purpose of this GP role is to provide clinical supervision to the pharmacy prescription hub and pharmacist prescribers.

There will be no clinical caseload associated with the role, but the post-holder will have an honorary contract with NuTH, and access to patient records for the purpose of supervising clinical pharmacist practice. NuTH will hold vicarious liability for this service, and the Consultant Pharmacist for Integration will hold governance and management responsibility as the service lead.

This post is suitable for an experienced GP, committed to developing others and delivering high-quality services.

Key Working Relationships:

  • GP Practices

  • Primary Care Networks

  • Pharmacy Hub

  • Universities and education providers

  • GP Federation - NGPS

  • North East North Cumbria Integrated Care Board - NENC ICB

  • Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

  • Community Pharmacy

Main duties of the job

NGPS will be working in partnership with the Integrated Pharmacy Team in Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver clinical supervision for the pharmacy prescription hub team, across two GP sessions per month. The pharmacy prescription hub is located at Regent Point in Gosforth and is staffed by a team or pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, who work in partnership with selected GP practices in the processing of most non-urgent prescriptions.

The hub aims to improve the safety and quality of prescribing at the practice and to reduce the workload of the practices prescribers, to free up capacity to consult with their patients. Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians have expertise in keeping people safe with their medicines.

Quality improvement is embedded across activities in the hub, and recent projects have included management of stock shortages and increasing patient uptake of the new medicines service. The hub also has access to the hospitals computer systems; making communication between the hospital and the GP practice easier.
