Job summary

Nightingale House Hospice is entering a very exciting part of its development and we have an opportunity for a Speciality Doctor to join our team on a permanent basis. This would suit someone who is motivated, flexible and who has an interest in palliative care and is looking to develop their experience and skills in this area in a supportive environment. The role will be within the Medical Team and work closely with the Medical Director. There will be opportunities to participate in education and audit, as well as to deliver excellent care to patients and their loved ones in our 12 bedded inpatient unit and in outpatients. The post is ideally a full-time position, but part time/ job share applicants considered.

The role will be based at the hospice, joining our friendly, knowledgeable, experienced and well-supported multi professional team in our brand new redeveloped Inpatient Unit and wellbeing centre. Your role will be to deliver medical and specialist palliative care to patients in our Inpatient Unit and wellbeing centre, in a holistic manor, considering social, emotional and spiritual health as well as physical symptoms. Our aim is to provide individualised care, seeing the patient behind the diagnosis, so they can achieve the best possible quality of life with their loved ones. There will be excellent support for personal development and opportunities for quality improvement work.

Main duties of the job

  • Admit patients to the inpatient unit for end-of-life care, symptom management or respite
  • provide care for inpatients and outpatients
  • To identify and address the physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs of patients and the emotional, spiritual and psychological needs of their families and friends
  • Work closely with and support the nursing team and wider MDT
  • Communicate compassionately with patients and their families
  • Participate in on-call rota (1:4 weekends), being on-site Saturday morning and available to attend from 9-5 Saturday and Sunday (1 day off in lieu provided following the on-call weekend)
  • Complete administrative tasks arising from medical work
  • Liaise closely with external partners such as GPs, Specialist Palliative Care Team (SPCT), district nurses, specialist clinical nurses and secondary care
  • To promote and participate in teaching and educational activity
  • To participate in clinical governance activities e.g. quality improvement activities
  • Promote the ethos of audit in the organisation and where possible participate in clinical audit
  • To maintain personal development through personal development reviews, monthly 1:1 meetings, clinical supervision, training, supporting professional activities (SPA) time and appropriate courses

You will work alongside the nursing team, pharmacist, patient flow, rehabilitation team, family support team, chaplain and complementary therapist to deliver care to patients with life limiting conditions. You will deliver individualised, holistic care to patients and their loved ones, with empathy, compassion and kindness, respecting patients dignity and with an aim to empower them to live well with a palliative diagnosis.

Nightingale House Hospice is an Independent Hospice providing care and support for patients and families living with a life limiting illness. We provide care across a wide stretching area from Wrexham, Flintshire and East Denbighshire to Barmouth and the border towns including Oswestry and Whitchurch. Our ambitious plans mean we need to raise over £4 million each year: something we do with the huge support from of our local community.

  • Participate in clinical meetings as part of the MDT.
  • Complete administrative tasks arising from medical work discharge summaries, letters following outpatient appointments, death certificates, coroner's reports.
  • Liaise closely with external partners such as GPs, Specialist Palliative Care Team (SPCT), district nurses, specialist clinical nurses and secondary care.
  • Develop and maintain high professional standards within the service and promote multidisciplinary team working
  • To promote and participate in teaching and educational activity, teaching medical students, GP registrars, colleagues, patients and families.
