Job responsibilities

End of Life Doula/Soul midwife 

Location: Based in Sydenham and working in Croydon

Department: Sydenham Community Team (Croydon) 

Hours: Monday to Friday (occasional weekends)

Salary: £27,500per annum per annum (inclusive of HCA, with an additional allowance payable if working over a weekend)   

Contract; Fixed Term for 15 months

The St Christophers Community Palliative Care Team provides care and support to people who live in the London boroughs of Bromley, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, and Croydon. At any one time, our team is supporting around 1200 people. We work seven days a week, and our clinicians work between the hours of 7.30am - 9pm. 

 

Every day our team of clinicians work across the whole organisation to:

  • Take new referrals, and sign post health and social care providers to improve access to end of life care 
  • Triage calls from patients, their families, and other health and social care professionals to provide telephone advice and support, 
  • Contact people by telephone or video consultation; See people in their own homes, or in our outpatient clinics, to assess and plan care and support interventions.
  • Undertake urgent home visits when necessary with support 

Our aim is to support people to be cared for in their own homes for as long as possible. We work with the in-patient unit at St Christophers to support people when they need extra care that cannot be provided at home. Our team also actively participate in, and contribute towards education and learning with our colleagues in St Christophers CARE (Centre for Awareness and Response to End of Life). 

Your new role

This is a new innovative role that has been commissioned by The Place of Croydon to offer support to people living with inequity in a novel way. These people will already be receiving support from our clinical teams at St Christophers but the role of the doula will be to support a person and those important to them with a terminal diagnosis. This is a non-medical role to promote the quality of wellbeing, the persons sense of identity and heritage and also their self-worth.

 

The role will walk with the individual from any stage in their terminal journey including offering bereavement support and funeral planning. There will be a clear focus on practical, emotional and if appropriate spiritual needs offering compassion, knowledge and experience. 

 

The role may be required to support an individual during an inpatient stay as well as in their own home.

 

The group of people who we anticipate will be supported through this role includes;

 

  • Those living in Croydon, who are approaching the end of life, and in circumstances or with conditions that have formerly been shown to lead to poor outcomes at end of life with specific focus on: 
    • Those in mental health / learning disability care provision
    • People living in Care Home
    • The homeless population
    • Refugees
    • Other minority Groups where there are intersecting concerns
    • Prioritising those in the most deprived postcodes in Croydon

To succeed in this role

You will be a qualified end of life Doula/Soul midwife or nearing the end of your training and demonstrate a passion for working in this innovative role supporting people who face significant inequity who are reaching the end of their life. As this is a new role we are looking for a self-starter who is prepared to develop this role during this fixed term contract
