Job summary

Working under the direction of the Lead Counsellor, to provide a high quality, cost effective clinical service in counselling on an individual or group basis to patientswith an advanced, progressive life limiting illness that have special palliative care needs and/or their families. This service also provides bereavement counselling and support to the families and carers of our patients, and the wider community of Barnsley

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist counselling to patients and/or their families with a life limiting illness and pre and post bereavement counselling and support to families and their loved ones.

About us

Barnsley Hospice is a charity that provides specialist palliative and end of life care to hundreds of local people and those close to them each year. Our main priority is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients with a life-limiting illness, whilst supporting their families, during the period of illness and bereavement. As a specialist care provider, the range of skills we offer include, pain and symptom management, emotional support and end of life care. The hospice currently employs about 100 people and has a team of volunteers, based both at the hospice and within our retail hub.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Quality (includes safety/experience/effectiveness)

1.To provide counselling to patients with a cancer diagnosis or life limiting illness.

2.To provide pre and post bereavement counselling to families and carers.

3.To work autonomously and maintain a caseload within a Hospice setting following Hospice policies and procedures.

4.Keep accurate records and use relevant computerised databases, to assist in the collation of data for statistical purposes.

5.Ensure that a patients holistic needs are met in a person-centred way

6.To effectively engage and involve patients, families and carers in its widest sense and at every opportunity encouraging a co-design approach to service development. Communicate appropriately with all staff, liaise with other departments and agencies and attend internal and external meetings as appropriate.

7.Ensure the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.

8.Promote evidence-based practice, wherever possible.

Governance & Leadership

1.Work with the Lead Counsellor to ensure that clinical governance processes at unit/dept level encompass measures to ensure the quality of the fundamental and essential aspects of care.

2.Participate in Barnsley Hospice clinical governance arrangements, attend relevant meetings as required and participate in audits as requested by the Lead Counsellor

3.Contributes to the quality improvement agenda as required

4.To liaise and communicate with members of the Counselling Team and share the responsibility for the care of the patient and their relatives and carers, if appropriate, and with the clients informed consent.

5.To liaise with external services i.e Social Services, mental health teams, GPs, hospital and community teams, voluntary sector, when appropriate

6.To work closely with other colleagues in the hospice and community multi-disciplinary teams, and provide support and advice to them as required. Attend team meetings as appropriate

7.To assist the Lead Counsellor in developing quality standards and auditing the service

8.Maintain an awareness of professional developments in counselling through liaising locally and nationally with other counselling services.

9.To actively promote the aims and objectives of Barnsley hospice to internal and external stakeholder

Workforce Development & Professional Standards

1.To be a registered/accredited member of BACP. To ensure that registration is kept up to date and your practice adheres to professional standards.

2.To maintain a high standard of clinical practice by attending regular supervision and training as per BACP guidelines for good practice. The post holder will negotiate their own personal supervision, costs will not be reimbursed.

3.Promote a positive learning environment within the clinical area.

4.Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education and attendance management.

Other Responsibilities

1.To undertake any other duties, commensurate with the role as required by the Hospice management.

2.To act as an ambassador of the Hospice, maintaining honesty, integrity and trustworthiness at all times.

3.The post holder will be expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

4.The post holder will ensure that they are aware of and apply health and safety and fire precautions.

5.The post holder will ensure that clinical risk management and safeguarding procedures and relevant good practice guidelines are followed at all times.

6.The post holder is to ensure data protection is maintained at all times.

7.The post holder will be flexible in terms of working hours in order to meet service needs.

8.The post holder will support the Hospice as required, across the range of his/her duties as appropriate within the grading of this post. In the context of rapid and ongoing change within the Hospice, the above responsibilities represent the current priorities and requirements for the post. These priorities will develop and evolve over time. Any significant changes will be the subject of full communication and consultation with the post holder.
