Job summary

Are you looking for a caring, people-focussed support bank/casual role? Whilst were busy, we try to have time to spend with our in-patients and their loved ones, giving everyone an individual, people-focussed and dignified experience during life and after death.

Youll provide a nursing support role, working within a skilled, multi-disciplinary team, effectively communicating with patients, visitors and colleagues to help to maintain patient wellbeing and comfort.

Youll have experience working in a caring environment, which could come from working in peoples homes, care homes or clinical settings, for example. Youll have NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, or equivalent, and be able to work effectively in a varied team, to ensure care is carried out effectively and efficiently, whilst always maintaining a caring, compassionate approach.

Hours will be ad-hoc, based on rota and clinical requirements which are 24/7, 365 days a year with a variety of shifts.

Main duties of the job

To work as a member of the Hospice team, assisting nursing staff to provide a high standard of direct nursing care to patients and their families.

The Kirkwood provide specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees with advanced, progressive illnesses at any time from diagnosis to the end of life, respecting their individual needs and wishes. Care and support are also provided for their family members, friends, and carers, both during the illness and after death. Through education, training, and partnership with others, we improve care for everyone affected by a life limiting illness.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To work with the multidisciplinary team assisting all members to achieve a high standard of care for patients and their families.

  • To develop good communications with the patient and the family, passing on all relevant information to the Primary Nurse/Nurse in Charge giving emotional support as necessary.

  • To inform the Primary Nurse/Nurse in Charge of any change in the patient's condition.

  • To liaise with other hospice staff as necessary to maintain the comfort and well-being of the patient.

  • To carry out nursing care in accordance with hospice policy, individual care plans and patient wishes.

  • To respect the privacy and dignity of the patient at all times.

  • To escort patients as requested by Primary Nurse/Nurse in Charge.

Teamwork

  • To accurately communicate telephone or other messages to or from the Primary Nurse/Sister.

  • To assist with the promotion of good staff morale, giving support and help to others as appropriate.

  • To liaise within the team to ensure that all duties are completed

  • To relay queries or concerns to the Primary Nurse/Nurse in Charge, including regarding visitors

General Unit Support

  • To adhere to agreed procedures for the care and custody of patients' valuables and property.

  • To maintain general tidiness throughout the bed area.

  • To exercise care and economy in the use and maintenance of hospice property and equipment, reporting any faults as per hospice policy.

  • To be involved in verbal and written reports, under the supervision of the Primary Nurse ensuring all communications are of a high standard.

  • To report all accidents, incidents, hazards or complaints to nurse in charge, completing appropriate forms as per hospice policy.

Other duties / personal development

  • To participate in surveys or audits as required.

  • To attend staff meetings and discussion groups.

  • To attend study days or education
