Job summary

The Kirkwood are pleased to welcome applications for an experienced Staff Nurse to join the In-Patient Unit team, supporting the Specialist Palliative Care Unit Manager and Practice Development Sister to plan, implement and evaluate patient care. The successful candidate will act as specialist resource within a multidisciplinary team, with managerial, educative and quality assurance responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will be a registered nurse, willing to commit to study at least to Masters level and should have excellent communication and organisational skills, leadership and teaching experience and extensive palliative care experience as a Staff Nurse.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Role:

The successful candidate will act as a primary nurse with responsibility for the organisation of patient care and delegation of duties to nursing staff. They will participate in patient care activities, giving guidance and support as necessary to other team members.

The successful candidates will ensure all medication and correctly stored, administered and recorded, and will ensure that nursing documentation is accurate, whilst maintaining confidentiality to meet professional and legal requirements.

Managerial Role

The successful candidate will manage bank staff on a day to day basis to ensure appropriate staffing levels, obtaining or cancelling bank shifts as appropriate, whilst also participating in the recruitment of junior staff. They will also carry out nursing administrative duties and will ensure agreed stock levels of stores and other equipment are maintained.

Educational Role

The successful candidate will participate in the induction, training and supervision of team members and will participate in hospice education and training programmes.

You will also demonstrate and develop a high-quality nursing care through evidence based practice whilst supervising other team members.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Role

To provide a high standard of specialist nursing care at all times with due regard for the patient as a member of a family unit.

To act as specialist resource to colleagues, MDT members and external agencies.

To act as link nurse for clinical topics and participate in education and training for that area of care.

To function as an active participant in MDT meetings and other clinical meetings providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate.

To act as a Primary Nurse, responsible for the organisation of patient care and delegation of duties to nursing staff. To participate in all patient care activities, giving guidance and support as necessary to other team members.

To ensure that all medications are correctly stored, administered and recorded in accordance with Hospice policy and legal requirements.

To ensure that nursing documentation is recorded accurately, legibly, maintaining confidentiality to meet professional and legal requirements.

To deal with and report accidents, untoward occurrences or complaints according to Hospice policy. To co-operate with any investigation of accidents, untoward occurrences or complaints.

To initiate the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team members to ensure effective patient management, continuity of care and the support of patients and their families.

To promote and maintain staff morale, giving support, supervision and guidance to other team members.

To establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, relatives and all visitors to the Hospice.

To ensure that all staff are trained in the use of equipment having regard for the safety of the patients and themselves.

To be proactive in the development of clinical areas, supporting Sisters and Matron through contribution of new ideas to improve and maintain standards of care.

To be aware of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness within the Hospice and act accordingly.

To recognise, prevent where possible and manage areas of conflict, reporting to Sister or Matron if unable to resolve.

To carry out annual appraisal of team members as required.

To acknowledge and respond to the concerns of patients, families or carers and take initial steps to resolve issues, escalating to Sister or Matron as appropriate.

To work in other areas in the hospice as required to ensure continuity of patient care in all areas.

Educational Role

To participate in the induction, training and ongoing supervision of team members.

To participate in hospice education and training programmes.

To be appraised annually by Sisters or Matron .

To develop and maintain personal and professional development sharing knowledge and skills with multi-disciplinary team members.
