JOB TITLE: Specialist Palliative Care In-Patient Unit Manager

HOURS: 30-37.5 hours per week

SALARY: £42,340 per annum based on full time hours

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join The Kirkwood as a Specialist Palliative Care In-Patient Unit Manager. The postholder will carry 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of The Kirkwoods In-Patient Unit, providing management and professional leadership of the dedicated nursing team.

The In-Patient Unit Manager will also focus on patient and service user involvement to ensure services are inclusive and co-designed with patients, families and staff to ensure services meet the needs of patients across all communities in Kirklees.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the direct management of a team of nurses and will also be responsible for the ward/department clinical budget and effective use of resources. Working closely with Kirkwoods Matron, Practice Development Lead and the Medical team.

The ideal candidate will be a first level registered nurse, with specialist palliative care knowledge gained through further education and experience, extensive experience of palliative care at NHS AfC band 6 or 7 or equivalent with experience of leading and managing a team, teaching and mentoring, recruitment and retention and effective resource management.

The post holder should have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, be emotionally resilient, be committed to continuous professional development and both believe in and uphold The Kirkwoods values in all their actions and endeavours.

JOB SUMMARY

The Specialist Palliative Care In-Patient Unit Manager will carry 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of The Kirkwoods In-Patient Unit, providing management and professional leadership of the nursing team.

A key element of this role requires the personalising of individual patient care based upon the needs and wishes of the patient and their family, support by the wider MDT in delivering this service. The post-holder will also be directly involved in succession planning of existing staff.

The post-holder is responsible for ensuring the assessment of care needs and that the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care are maintained to a high standard. You will support and empower staff to lead and develop services and promote a multi-professional approach with shared care and accountability, with the aim of further developing models of care across the hospice setting that support delivery of the highest standards of personalised patient care. There will be a focus on the closer integration of the In-patient Unit and Community clinical nurse specialists to support continuity of care and a sharing of skills and knowledge. The In-Patient Unit Manager will ensure cost effective use of resources, managing the administrative and financial aspects of the unit.

The In-Patient Unit Manager will also focus on patient and service user involvement to ensure services are inclusive and co-designed with patients, families and staff to ensure services meet the needs of patients across all communities in Kirklees.

JOB DIMENSIONS

Current services comprise of 16 inpatient beds (9 side rooms and two bays), this service also includes advice and support line 24 hours a day which supports direct admission from the community and hospitals into the unit. The role requires direct management of approximately 45 whole time equivalent nurses and support staff. The jobholder is also responsible for the ward/department clinical budget and effective use of resources.
