Main duties of the job

What's it like working here?

You'll join a supportive, multi-disciplinary team delivering respite and end-of-life care to children and young people in their home or at the Acorns for the Three Counties hospice, Worcester, as well as provide support to their families. We tailor our care packages to meet each child's clinical, emotional and spiritual needs and there's time here to focus on clients.

About us

The hospice is purpose-built with individually decorated rooms, each overlooking our gardens. We try to make it as welcoming and friendly as possible a home-from-home for children and their families.

Typical Shift Patterns

12.5 hour day: 7.30am - 8.00pm or 9.00am - 9.30pm

7.5 hour day: 7.30am - 3.00pm or 2.00pm - 9.30pm

12.5 hour night: 7:30pm - 8am

Job description

Job responsibilities

a. Actively encourage a family atmosphere within Acorns.

b. Use a systematic and individualised approach to plan care of the child and family both within their homes and the hospice to deliver quality care that is consistent with care delivered by other providers.

c. Assess, maintain and evaluate agreed standards of care in partnership with family carers and the child

d. Ensure all medication is safely administered, recorded and stored.

e. Facilitate outings play and activity that is appropriate to age and development needs of the child.

f. Use evidence to underpin practice by adhering to acorns policies and maintaining an awareness of new and developing care options.

g. Every employee has a professional responsibility to maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of issues required to deliver quality care at the end of life.

h. Every employee has a professional responsibility to maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of issues around care of children and young people with complex needs including LTV, TPN, Tracheotomies, Central Lines and any other complex care required.

i. Every employee has a professional responsibility to maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of issues around the safeguarding of children, and to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to protect children facilitated through effective communication across multidisciplinary agencies.

j. Every employee has a responsibility to maintain confidential, accurate and timely records.

k. Develop the required computer skills to use technology based solutions to facilitate effective communication and record keeping.

l. Maintain an awareness of the diversity of families supported by Acorns , and ensure that the cultural needs of the children and families are met appropriately.

m. Ensure professional boundaries are maintained and that due attention is paid to confidentiality, privacy and dignity at all times.

Qualifications

Essential

  • RSCN/ RN (Child)

Desirable

  • ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Bereavement and Loss Counselling.
  • Paediatric Palliative Care Qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of paediatric nursing.
  • Experience as Nurse-in-Charge of shift
  • Family centred work.
  • Awareness of safeguarding issues

Desirable

  • Experience of paediatric palliative care.
  • Experience of work with children with special needs or
  • disability.
